Use a third party viewer that allows you to turn it off.  The SL Viewer does not.  Firestorm allows you to set it by group.  And even for groups where you do get the group chat, it will keep it turned off for a certain amount of time after you close the group chat window.  Not sure what other third party viewers allow group chat control.
