How do TVs (not simple media prim) work?

The TVs that sell for like 3k on marketplace are obviously not some useless media prim which only displays a web browser client-side. Anyone know how exactly these work? There seems to be very little info on these from my various Google/LSL wiki searches. My guesses:

1. The creator has their own website/server with a basic video selection layout and video player
2. The creator integrated their website with some kind of Youtube/Hulu/etc API that allows them to retrieve videos
3. The creator is displaying this website on a prim to all users, server-side, through some kind of script

Is it something like that? If it is, the 3rd step seems to be mostly a mystery as I can't find anything on LSL wiki that remotely relates to this.
