Hey, I haven't logged into Second Life in years. I'm a 3d artist and I'd like to try making and importing my creations into Second Life. I'm mostly confused about land I can use to test things. Should I just use public sandboxes, would becoming a premium member serve me better, or renting a space?

I'd suggest you start at a public sandbox and then maybe you decide you want your own place later.

Also, start at the beta grid, not the main grid. Each upload to the maing grid costs a few Lindens. Not much, but it adds up fast and even if you're an experienced 3D artist, it'll take you a lot of failed uploads before you get a feel for the peculiarities of SL mesh.
