Strange to get that message if you have never been in SL before. Try this:

On the login screen at the top, go to Me > Preferences, check the small box next to "Show on Login", click OK and close preferences.

Now you should have a small drop-down menu down next to where you enter your username and password, click that and type Smith as your start location.

Try to login again.
