Is there a way to issue the keyboard 'esc' key command within an lsl script?

Not that I'm aware of, there isn't.   If you're manually overridden whatever default camera settings the viewer is using, then a script can't use any camera controls it's been granted until you manually release the camera by hitting "Esc".

In future, you might want to ask specific scripting questions in the Scripting Forum, where they will probably be seen by more scripters than will see them here,  but on this occasion I don't think the answer would be any different.
