You can edit your profile online, yes. Go here, to my.secondlife.com and log in.

I would encourage you to find out why your system can't handle opening a web browser profile while you're in SL. That probably doesn't bode well for a good experience in-world.

Most viewers (including the LL viewer) do not have threaded file pickers.

This means that if you have the file picker open for longer then ~ 1 min while choosing a texture to set as your profile image, you will get disconnected.

If you are using Mac, you are probably suffering from the known File Picker crash - see http://wiki.phoenixviewer.com/fs_mesh_upload 

The workaround for Mac on that wiki page will work for Firestorm, LL viewer or any other V3 based TPV.
