How can I stop objects from becoming invisible when selected/ in edit?

Lately when I try to edit objects they become invisible except for the selection outlines.  This makes placing things and editing textures slow and difficult.  This happened once before for a while and I can't remember what i did that seemed to make it revert back to normal.  Any insights would be appreciated.
