Your friends are gravely mistaken.  The forums are all public areas.  With the exception of a very occasional Linden, we're all SL residents here.  We share our vast wisdom free of charge.  If you have any to add, you are welcome to join in the fun.

Your friends might have been suggesting that you should look for a job in the InWorld Employment forum. Most of the jobs that are posted there are pretty low-grade, low-pay jobs.  We don't have much need for shop clerks, truck drivers, or building maintenance staff here, and the truly talented creators and performers here don't generally need help.  You might also take a look at http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Guide_to_Jobs_in_Second_Life
