The easiest way is to buy some Linden Dollars ($L) with a credit card or a verified PayPal account.  You get about $L250 per $1 US dollar.  You can register a credit card or your PayPal account as a payment method on the Dashboard page of the Second Life website.  You can purchase $L either here on the website or from your viewer in world.

You can also earn $L by working at a Second Life job.  However, the pay is way below minimum wage in Real Life, and most employers won't hire you until you have 30 days of experience in SL, at least.  You can search the Classified ads using your in world Search function (CTRL+F) -- look in the "Employment" sub-category.

Most people who make significant amounts of money in Second Life do it in one of two ways.  1) They buy land and then rent it out to tenants, or try to sell it at a profit, or 2) they learn to create things that other people will pay money to buy...clothes, shoes, houses, vehicles...just about anything.  Both of these require a large investment of time, and sometimes a large investment of money as well.

I remember a long time ago in SL ...

You could :

  1. buy L$ using your own money
  2. make and sell stuff in SL, or lease land
  3. do a job in SL (sex escorts were paid well, dancers less so, some hardly at all)
  4. enter competitions that have big cash prizes
  5. do surveys (are they still around?) for which you had to give your email address, so a new hotmail address was advised
  6. look for money  trees and pick low-value bills from their branches
  7. there were things called 'sploders' in nightclubs (still around?) - LL banned gambling but if there was an element of "skill" involved, those were allowed
  8. "camping" (still allowed?) where you would dance or sit or wield a brush, just to increase traffic on a sim - very very low pay but still, we did it
  9. prize chairs - gave out prizes to the first avi to sit there whose name began with a certain letter
  10. freebie stores - there is (or was) a vast amount of stuff you could pick up for free
