No, it is not possible.

You can only make a display name, and change that once a week...But your username, you can never change, it will always be visible to everybody.

If you want another log in name, you have to make a new avatar

The OP asks about the log in name...it cannot be changed.

To clarify Muletta's response, you have to make a new ACCOUNT.  Your avatar is just the appearance you are wearing.

What you want is to create an Alt Account. See this web page for Linden Lab's policy on creating alts:

Unfortunately, alts do not share the same inventory, even if both accounts are owned by the same person. It is possible to transfer inventory, but only if the items you want to transfer are "transfer enabled". Creators of clothing etc set permissions on each of their products. "Copy / no transfer" is very common.

Secondly, it is no longer possible to create new accounts with the "firstname space lastname" user name format. All new accounts must be single user name accounts. You can have any display name you want, on any account.
