Why can't I emote?

When I try to use /me in the main chat it does not show. My emote can work in the IM but not in the main chat.

I have tried reinstalling the software but it's still the same.

If anyone knows of a possible solution, I'd really appreciate it.

Look through your active gestures. It sounds to me like you have one running that changes "/me" into something else. It might not be easy to find though - especially if it was created by some wiseguy who things messing with people is funny. So the name of the gesture might not give you any clues. But the "replace with" field if you look at each one will. (If that isn't there - then they could have it say something in chat that is different, but it wouldn't replace your original text).
