First, be sure that you are using a current version of the viewer.  An very old version shouldn't work at all, and one that is just a bit out of date could still give you trouble.  If you have updated, be sure that you did it the right way -- "manually" -- instead of just dumping a new version on top of the old one and assuming that it will replace it completely.  A clean, "manual" re-installation can save you a lot of headaches.  See http://community.secondlife.com/t5/English-Knowledge-Base/How-to-uninstall-and-reinstall-Second-Life/ta-p/1375231

Then, pay close attention to your Internet connection because it sounds like yours is a bit flaky.  Reboot your router and modem by unplugging both from the power for a few minutes, then replugging them and restarting your computer.  That will clear their RAM and gave your system a better grasp on an IP address.  If you're using a wireless connection, I'd suggest switching to a direct LAN cable.  Plenty of people seem to have no trouble with wireless, but Linden Lab does not recommend it because it can be a source of instability and signal loss. First be sure you are using an up-to-date viewer. There have been many changes in inventory and avatar texture baking.

Second, if the problem won't clear up, read this page:  http://wiki.phoenixviewer.com/fs_bake_fail

Many people, including me, have had avatar bake failures over the last few days. I don't know why, but it has been better today.
