Open your inventory and click the + sign at the bottom. Select New Notecard and an empty notecard will appear in your inventory. Open it, write in, and save it. The open an IM to the person you want to send it to and drag-drop it into the IM window. 

The notecard will be called "New notecard" but you can change that by right clicking it in your inventory and clicking Rename.

ETA: I just noticed that you use firestorm. The method of creating a new notecard will be very similar so have a look around your inventory.

When you done, start an IM with the person you like to send it and simply drag it into the IM.

or

Right mouse click the notecard and select "Share"

It's amazing how much you can find just by typing your search term and the phrase Second Life!

You can even filter it down by typing "notecard site:secondlife.com" without the quotes in a search engine (gooogle, etc)
