The hardest part about placing a skybox is to make sure that it is within your parcel borders.  Here's what I do...

1.  At ground level, rez a big flat prim.  Stretch it to cover your entire parcel of land, but be sure none of the edges stick over the boundaries.

1a.  If you have an irregular parcel, you can place marker posts at each corner, instead of one big flat prim.

2.  Sit on the slab you made, and using the edit window, change its Z position to the altitude where you want your skybox.

(Notes on altitude:  Most private estates don't permit skyboxes below a certain height...usually around 250-300m.  The ground is not rendered at altitudes above 1,000m, so placing your box higher than that will likely reduce viewer lag.  The maximum build height is 4096m.)

3.  Since you only changed the height location of your positioning slab, you can use it as a guide to place your skybox, and be sure that the skybox is all within your land borders.  Rez the skybox, move it into position, and then delete the positioning slab or marker posts.

4.  BE SURE to take a landmark, so you can get BACK to your skybox after you leave or log off!

About height:

How high can I put a skybox?

4096m is the building limit. You can’t put anything higher than that, so make sure the roof of your skybox is below that height.

How to tell how high you are? Well, if you’re using any of the older Second Life viewers, look at the very top where the land info is listed. The last set of numbers is your height:

If you’re using the new Viewer 2, click the name in the address bar. It will turn orange,  and again the last set of numbers is your height:

NOTE: this is the height that your avatar is at in the sim, so make sure your avatar is at the same height that you want to rez your skybox.
