Hiya Sub,

Emote is a third person form of posting a comment in chat.

Rather than typing "I'm doing the happy dance because you asked a question." in local chat or IM, which would look this:

"Madelaine McMasters: I'm doing the happy dance because you asked a question."

I could type "/me does the happy dance because you asked a question." and you'd see...

"Madelaine McMasters does the happy dance because you asked a question."

The viewpoint of the emoted statement is different enough to make this method worth having.

In venues that do not support the /me prefix (like this one) people often type it anyway.

Emotes are often used in role-play, though the style of their usage varies widely, from short quick ones as I've shown here, to long paragraphs of prose intended to describe a scene and mood. Everybody has their own way of using them, and you'll develop your own style over time, adapting it as necessary for the situation.

/me does the happy dance because you asked a question.

;-)
