If you save IMs and chatlogs to your hard drive, you should be able to retrieve the message.  Look for the Second Life "roaming" folder.

Depending which computer system you're using, look for the folder as below:

Windows XP: C:\Documents and Settings\[your own username here]\Application Data\SecondLife

Windows Vista: C:\Users\[your own username here]\AppData\Roaming\SecondLife

Windows 7: C:\Users\[your own username here]\AppData\Roaming\SecondLife

Mac: /Users/[your own username here]/Library/Application Support/SecondLife

 

Within the folder for your avatar, you should be able to see who IMd you most recently.
