Welcome to Second Life

A 4096sqm lot is generally 64x64 meters and is about what you need for a family home consisting of several bedrooms and the standard common rooms with enough prims left over to put some furniture in all the rooms.

You can get land for as little as 1L for a 4096 on a private estate. But you never pay it off.  You have to pay a tier every month to the estate owner.  Some estates will let you pay it weekly but you do have to pay it on time or you lose your land.  The estate owner has to have it to pay the tier to LL or lose the sim.

Mainland is the same way, except you do have to buy with a more substantial down payment and pay tiers too as well as be a premium member.  You pay your tiers to LL and not only will you lose your land if you fall behind, your account will be suspended until you pay what is owed.

You can rent land on the mainland from another resident and not have to be a premium member, but still the weekly rent will run about the same.

Tiers/rent on a 4096 are going to run about 1600L to 2600L a week depending on location and other amenities.  Tiers are your share of the cost of the server space that is used to run your land and like taxes in RL are unavoidable.

You can get a lot of free things in SL but land isn't one of them.  What you are asking someone to do is pay the major portion of your tier for you most of the time, and all of it whenever you 'don't have money'.  Unless  you have a very good friend or sugar daddy or momma who is willing to do this, it isn't going to happen.

Here is good information on bying land.
