my chat log has disappared;

Your "chat log" is the text file on your computer's hard drive that records ALL your local chat, from the first time you established it.  It is only present IF you have enabled chat logging in your Preferences.  To find it, do a search on your hard drive for a file called "chat.txt",

But I think you do not mean your chat log.  I think what you have mislaid is your Local Chat window, that shows the local chat for the CURRENT session.  Try hitting CTRL+H.

Note that the local chat window (and IM windows) may be undocked from the main Communication window.  With a tab selected, click the small "pages" icon next to the "close this window" X.  To re-dock the tab, click this icon again.
