Dilbert Dilweg
One way is to bake ambient occlusion maps and blend them Or bake the ambient occlusion with a full render http://cgcookie.com/blender/2010/07/06/tip-baking-ambient-occlusion/

Dilbert Dilweg
Before you texture it . when it is solid white. you have to render the model with ambient occlusion several times till you get the numbers and correct shading you would like. you have to play around with it a bit..... Just sounds like you had the settings too intense. you need to use add instead of multiply maybe.. Use sky lighting instead of white and see how that works. You can bake the AO by it self several times while adjusting it to get the desired llight affect... You could also use lights and just baake shadows. but that to me is more trouble...
