how do you control the glow in v3

In any viewer, glow on objects is controlled in the Textures tab of your Build/Edit tool.  It's wise to keep the glow setting lower than about 0.05 most of the time, or things look truly radioactive.

Now, if everything looks like it is glowing, there's a possibility that alpha textures and objects with glow are interacting around you.  There was an old JIRA on this topic.  The problem was fixed long ago, but I suppose something like it might be happening.  IIRC, the workaround we used at the time was to open Preferences >> Graphics >> Hardware Settings and disable OpenGL Virtual Buffer Objects (VBO).  No guarantees, but try it.
