Can not get passed Initializing VFS...

Everytime I try to launch Second Life, I get the two messages: Detecting Hardware then Intializing VFS. Then the command box disapears and nothing happens. When I login on the Second Life webpage it says my account is active though. If I hit Launch Second Life from there, I get the same results. Any suggestions?
