How do I weight a long mesh dress, so that it does not deform when I upload it to SL?

I have finally learnt how to make fully fitted mesh, but nowhere, do they show a person how to weight a long dresd or skirt, I have been weighting on the avatar bottom so my dress moves like I'm wearing pants, stretching my texture to complete deformity. I realised that I need weight with the default skirt. However, I have no idea how to do this. I don't have avastar. Thank you.

Hi :)

Have you come across this 4 part video series by Aaark Ardvark:

Case Study: The wedding dress 01 to 4

This is not especially for fitted mesh but you may still find it interesting.

Be warned, they are not the usual straightforward "how to" videos. In this series he is trying, by experimentation to solve stretching and rigging problems when creating long dresses.

This is a reply he left to a comment on the first video:

"It's hard to find an equilibrium here, in this video in particular everything is more or less experimental in the sense that  I'm just doing my creative process out loud, which... can be horribly boring sometimes XDD"

He is using Avastar Workbench which can be downloaded for free from here :
