It cost quite a bit more for a single apartment than it does to rent a room in a house with other people. If one has a dog that needs a yard, an apartment might not even be a viable option.

While roommates may reduce your monthly housing expenses, it's at the cost of self-confidence and sanity. How much more could you accomplish with self-confidence and sanity? How much does it cost in terms of therapy and medications to restore self-confidence and sanity?

I've met several people from SL in RL and not had any bad experiences.  I've even shared hotel rooms with a couple of them.

How did you manage to share a hotel room, but not a bed? Was is it like one of those romantic comedies, where you could not afford separate rooms, and the only rooms available had single beds?

It something of a pointless discussion..

SL does desperately need more social focus and tooling .. in world .. you know, that other place.

So the mentors aren't going to be enough to get SL growing again?

SL needs in-world building tools for mesh so people will have a reason to login and revitalize the in-world builder community?

Maybe some policies and contests that promote team work and social interaction like the Gor community?

Since Linden Lab is privately held and appears to have the confidence of its investors, I can only assume that it is following a business model that works.

And mentors are there to help anyone who asks.

Mentors go beyond helping anyone who asks; some offer unsolicited help, which is creepy. And the question in my mind and probably that of new users, is SL really so drab and dreary that the best way for people to spend their time is to stand around a welcome center?

The sale to private equity was because of failure, not success. Earlier investors wanted their money back and SL wasn't generating enough profits to pay them, so SL was sold. The preferred way to cash out investors is an IPO, but that is for successful companies showing substantial growth in users and revenue.

The OP has offered a suggestion to help SL grow. It might work. There are a lot of people that attempt to use SL for a dating platform.

That's a highly questionable assumption, based on a model that equates success with growth and views mentors as marketing agents.

What do you equate success with? A dwindling population, decreased revenue, bankruptcy? Basing success on growth is not a highly questionable assumption, it's how organizations become larger, thrive and survive.

As far as the mentors being marketing agents, they are there to help retain new users because SL is NOT good at what it does. What's your view of mentors? What is their function? To creep out new residents? Give old residents something to do and a sense of self-importance because they're so bored?

However, this game has been out for 15+ years, and instead of continuing to meet ONLY people all around the world. Wouldn't it be interesting if there was an option to see who plays Second Life near you?

I think it's a good idea. What's stopping you from implementing it? Lack of belief in the idea? Script up a minimum viable product, distribute it, and see if it becomes popular.

I wish it was something that minor spent 6 years with someone who wanted to control everything from how I washed a dish to who I used as a doctor to dentist. Never in my life had I known someone that controlling and I raised by women.  I am not even sure the word manipulative could even begin to explain her personality.  It was so bad I was diagnosed with ptsd after I moved and sought therapy for depression that I had never had prior to living with her.

Six years is a long time. There must have been some positive moments, especially at the beginning, otherwise the relationship would have ended much sooner. Remember the positive and leave the negative in the past. Most likely you won't live forever, so try to be happy now. If that's too much for you at this moment, begin with a smaller goal, like getting your soul off life support. Then trying being less sad, followed by finding something to smile about. Don't stop until you reach your final goal.

I have it on good authority that some of the best therapy is to rub your face against the fur of a very soft cat. I'm allergic to cats, but I totally think it's worth it. If you're not allergic to cats, that's something to be smile about.

What is it? "I like a cheaper SL"  or "I like a more expensive SL"?
    I'm a bit confused now.

Creators don't have a monopoly on the market, unlike the Lindex, Marketplace, the exchange for cashing out,  and premium subscriptions. There is only one party that runs that, and it's pay the price or do without.

If you think a creator's product is too expensive for the features provided, don't buy it and buy a cheaper competing product.

Yeah. I avoid the Marketplace as much as possible, and even when out of desperation I manage to convince Marketplace search to return countably many results, the products are uniformly outdated garbage, even when I sort newest-first. And the reviews: worth less than nothing.

Maybe LL should ban the Marketplace, so the Lab can back to making money from tier. Alternatively, LL could raise the Marketplace commission to 99%. That would incentivize more creators to have in-world stores.
