As a merchant I can tell you that Inworld sales and Web sales appeal to two different types of buyer.  Inworld sales are generally impulse buys (since search isnt working correctly).  We put our wares in the sims that have good traffic.  For me..thats Role Play sims.  My web sales have picked up...but my sales overall have picked up.  I think that has more to do with RL economic conditions.
