    Naming Ourselves: Who Will Decide Who YOU Are?

    I've often thought about the side effects of naming or labeling.  For instance, in naming yourself as a feminist, you take on a whole lot of baggage that can be avoided by not naming yourself as such.  I remember in the early 70's when the feminist movement really took off and I embraced it wholeheartedly.  Bra burning, CR groups, Ms. Magazine, Our Bodies Ourselves, male chauvinism, The international year of the woman conference - Good times.  But eventually, to be labeled a feminist to me became reductionist. I'm so much more than that.  And really, how many times do I want to have those arguments?  I find that I can hold my radical viewpoints much more easily when I don't carry a sign over my head. 

    My sexuality is a private matter, even more so than my political beliefs.  And I think it is totally up to each individual to decide what is best for them.

    I named myself here, there and a few other places on the internet.  I know who I am.  My decision to share who I am with others is rather ambivalent.  My name gives a clue to who I am but it is not the summation of my essence.  It's really just a little joke at my own expense.  One of the things about me, that I am willing to share freely is that I suffer from clinical depression, and that I manage my condition with prescription medications.  Untreated, my condition at it's most extreme could be described as catatonic; and my RL name starts with a K.

    The bottom line for me when it comes to naming is a matter of manners.  The polite thing to do is to respect the choices of others.  Tell me who you are and I will accept you.

    In live chat I ignore everyone's typos, including (especially) my own.  In the forums I try a little bit harder to type it correctly and spell check when I am not sure.  I generally ignore other people's typos except when they are funny.  About the only time I will bother to respond in regards to misspellings is when they are so numerous or garbled that one's meaning is obscured.

    ETA: IIRC, the first hippiestock was also comprised of both live music and streamed... But then again, IIRC, there were also some virtual recreational pharmaceuticals and botanicals flying about so I may not recollect all that accurately.

    My Dear Ms. Woodells,

    It sounds to me as though the young man was looking for a place to put his sausage.  I do hope you were able to direct him to the meat market. I can understand your dismay at being asked such personal questions by a stranger. In this modern age I am afraid that manners are altogether way too lax in this regard. Sometimes one has no choice but to be candid.  Tell the gentleman that you don't believe in discussing beauty secrets in mixed company.

    Dearest Void,

    I can understand how the constant reminders about the vast emptiness of the universe can give one a bleak outlook.  That is why Doctors know all the best dead baby jokes.  It is good to remember when we stand at the edge of the abyss that it's OK to laugh.

    Sorting Inventory

    I was just thinking I needed to do something about my inventory the other day.  There are some great tips here. Some of them I may actually use even.  There's a really good blog out there called SL for Nowt that I've been reading since I joined SL.  If it weren't for Mar, my inventory would be even worse that it currently is. But it's hunting season right now....

    They did something really cool with firestorm in this latest release in addition to making mesh viewable.  Sure it's got bugs, it is still in beta after all. But the cool thing is that they fixed something (I don't know what it was but it meant that firestorm was mega laggy on my computer and that nothing ever rezzed, the whole of SL was gray) that was so broken before.  Now I can actually use the viewer!

    We've had this discussion numerous times in the past. The truth, of course, is that disclaimers are invalid but that is beside the point.  Someone posted an amusing disclaimer that I so enjoyed that I copied it into my profile.  It goes like this:

    This is a disclaimer to void your ToS disclaimer whether you read it or not. And if you try to void my disclaimer of your disclaimer, then I void your disclaimer voiding my disclaimer voiding your disclaimer. I further make it impossible for your disclaimer of my disclaimer to void your disclaimer able to void my disclaimer.

    What did you do as a noob(ie)?

    My first day I googled second life and found a really outdated article that explained how to make an AO bracelet.  I wanted to get rid of my newbie walk and I didn't know that there were free AOs. So I was working on making the bracelet and just having an awful time getting it to fit to my wrist because I was totally clueless about builiding. 

    So I googled again and hit upon New Citizens Inc and I tp'd there.  There I was - still in my noob clothes with this bracelet resting on my arm. People there suggested that I was skipping over a lot of important lessons like how to see and how to move in SL.  Luckily I had learned the most important lesson - how to get help. NCI Kuula became my home for the next 3 months and the kind people there taught me so much.

    I just didn't know that I didn't know what I didn't know. :smileyhappy:

    This is my second year with a premium account.  I don't know if I will continue it or not.  I miss the island I used to share with my partner.  Landscaping was fun and you really don't get to do that with a Linden home and let's be honest. You pay your 512 for a linden home but you don't actaully get 512 worth of land. There is no land beyond the house.  In fact for some home styles you have to derez the building in order to access the land menu. The gift furniture, while nice, is not to my taste. But it was a pleasant surprise. I've pretty much tried all the Linden homes that interested me and they make for a nice private changing room.  But I think I am ready to cut loose, quit premium and get a private island again.

    I was thinking the same thing Jacki, heard all kinds of rumors about the Cartel before I decided to go there in world and discovered it was really just a great group of people hanging out having fun.  Everyone who ever showed their face at the hangout was warmly welcomed and made to feel at home.  People will believe what they want to believe, I've given up trying to confuse them with the facts.

    That it irritates someone who would like to claim ownership to it's birth doesn't hurt either.

    That's interesting Dil, I didn't know that Keli came up with the name.  I always thought the group was formed in response to an attempt by someone to dis one (or more) of us by lumping us together and calling us ladies who lunch.  As if that meant that our opinions were  not to be treated with respect or courtesy.  Rather than allowing him to dismiss us this way, we embraced the concept, formed the group, started hanging out together and had ourselves a good time.  The afore mentioned someone has regretted his action and wishes he never said the words.

     

    So the afore mentioned someone started the name calling, Keli started the thread, Dee started the group and we all joined and started having fun (all except that afore mentioned someone and yes his name with a tic is a kind of ulcer)
