    Hi there ..

I'm wondering what fellow landlords have decided to do with regards to tenants use of RedZone on their residential sims. I'd like to hear from those who have chosen to ban it's use and from those who have not.  We occasionally have tenants complain a neighbor has RedZone and are trying to decide what our policy on the device should be. We really do not want to be SL "cops" and I do not mean to start a debate about this product. But, whether it is true or not, there is a perception that this product scans and can spy and I am thinking that perception may be impossible to overcome.

Thanks for being willing to share your experiences!

    Best wishes,

There are other security systems, such as Hippo, which do as good a job of security and privacy protection as Redzone or any of those other alt detectors do. And those systems are much cheaper, too.

I had thought of going into real estate at some point and I have actually been thinking on this subject. My decision, I will not allow any alt detecting device to be used at all. It will mean eviction without refund and will be in the lease and covenant.

If I get into real estate, that is.

There have probably been many requests for a sim/island/region in the past, and whether or not they have been met I cannot say. However, I can say that the benefits to whoever can provide one now should make up for any doubts today.

The Grid Republic is seeking a base of operations. The Grid Republic is not a military, but a government, or rather, an actual Republic. Other groups are free to join the Republic and become part of our Senate. Our basic physical design is partially based off of the fictional faction, The Galactic Republic, from the popular science-fiction franchise Star Wars.

However, do not assume that this makes it unworthy. The goal of the Republic is not to serve roleplayers, but to serve the entire Grid, particularly new players. The Republic is to privide business, combat, social, and advertisement opportunities to everyone on Second Life, without hindering the experience of others, which is why notices shall not be available to ordinary citizens. The Galactic Republic simply seemed like an interesting basis for the group.

On the sim we shall build, our Senate and Executive buildings for all government operations, our training center for our military, a city for the civilian population, and a Jedi Temple for those that actually DO seek roleplay, or who wish to help enforce the rule of law across Second Life. These are the main areas of the Sim only, and other, less noticable buildings shall be present as well. In order to fit this all in, each area shall be placed at a different height, just beyond the draw distance of most avatars.

The benefits to the provider of the Sim are thus: the rent from every single store and apartment rental shall go to whoever proves the Sim, and the provider shall also have a seat on the senate if they so choose.

In the past, I have been rudely mocked for this concept. However, is it so wrong to offer great new educational, business, advertisement opportunities, and more to Second Life's residents? I have been accused of being a Star Wars fan, which would be my only motivation for this, and while I admit I find the franchise enjoyable, I would have made the Grid Republic into a roleplay group if I cared more for science-fiction than for the residents of Second Life.

The benefits of this could be immense. If you have nothing positive to say or anything which cannot be of assistance in this task, then please do not reply. I have had my fill of feeling like the mocked inventors of old.

Best regards, and may you all be well.

Over all, not a bad concept, though there are some things that I have a problem with and some that you will have problems with.

First, perception. How many new residents will perceive your Republic as just another Star Wars sim?

Next, this thing about enforcing the rule of law across the Grid. Who's law? And by what authority?

Recognition. That is, why should anyone recognize your authority? To explain further, if one of your people come to me and tell me that I can or cannot do something, why should I pay any attention to them?

Also, how can you set your Republic up as a government? That is LL's job, not yours or mine. For any government to work it has to be accepted by the people it governs. It has to have the authority to make and repeal laws, mete our justice, ensure the safety and security of its citizens and much more.

How will you fund your government? Taxes? You cannot legally collect taxes unless you are a legally recognized government by RL nations.

I am not mocking you. I ask these questions in all seriousness. These questions and others will have to be answered before you will be taken seriously.

How do you see threads sorted by reply date, or in other orders, such as by number of responses, number of views, etc.?

It seemed to me the recent threads lists is sorted by date and time of thread creation, which is not generally what I want.

At any rate, it's possible to create urls to control sort orders for some forum software, and it might be possible for Lithium, but if so, I'm not familiar with how.

Maybe they will add that function, which I also want to use. One thing I did notice, though. I posted a thread in the Feedback forum about being stuck seeing only the OP and a list of respondants when I click on a Topic. Now, that problem has disappeared. Now when I click on a thread I get all the posts showing, though in Linear, not Threaded. Sounds like somebody is paying attention.

Is an avatar a part of the community or is an avatar relegated to be isolated? If this sub-forum is about "Your Avatar", does that mean you aren't a part of the community as a whole? I really hope not.

It might be a good idea to define what "Your Avatar" really means. IMO if each thread in this section is only about "Your Avatar" singularly, no one could ever reply because that would signify a "community". Second Life is a community based application and as a community, threads that improve that community, belong in this section.

So, if this sub-forum is about "Your Avatar" we should all speak up as singular avatars to create that community. The community is then naturally strengthened and benefits the entire community.

Is your avatar part of a community or is it a single entity?

Your avatar is as much a part of the SL community as your RL body is a part of the RL community.

  5. I actually liked the threaded view that we had before. Is it possible to config things to do that with this new 'ware? Currently, when I click on a topic I get the OP of the thread and then a list of the names of all the responses below, but those posts are not displayed.

Please don't refer me to the Knowledge Base and such, been there, done that 3 times now. I have also gone through everything under 'My Settings', Community Help, the SL Answers Forum.

I do not enjoy seeing animated gif files in forums, they wear out their welcome in one cycle at most, often less. I do not like having to press escape to stop the animation with each page display.

I use Firefox and the Adblock extension. This lets me not display specific image of my choice, so I'll be blocking animated gif files in badges, avatars, and signatures if they bug me, which most will.  The Opera browser has image blocking built in, I think. I'm not sure how to block images or otherwise stop animated gif files permanently in other browser, but there might well be a way to do so.

People thinking of making an attention getting animated gif file might want to consider that the response they provoke might be annoyance coupled with having the image permanently blocked from view.

I'd be ok with not allowing animated gifs at all, if that's an option Lithium offers, or letting individuals block animated gifs for themselves, if that's can be added to the user settings.

So far I've got two badges blocked and have seen one signature I'll block the next time I see it, and that's in just a few minutes of looking at the forums.

I have to disagree with your call to eliminate animated banners and badges. I do agree that many are annoying, but there have also been quite a few that are quite creative and amusing. Your proposed ban would also eliminate those, which would also eliminate a small enjoyment for me and others.

  7. You can deposit US$ at anytime from your credit card or PayPal. You do this from your Dashboard. On teh left side, you will see three grey title banners: "Account", "Stay in the Loop" and "Linden Exchange". Its the 3rd one you want, the Exchange. You should see the word Manage in that section. That link will take you to where you can transfer US$ to your account. LL calls this increasing your credit, so don't let that confuse you. In otherwords, US$ in your SL account is called credit by LL. so, just follow the steps, filling in the info you need, its very straight forward.

  8. No more abusive than being an adult in RL and being a child in SL, being a human in RL and an animal in SL, being a priest in RL and a demon in SL. Abuse is about mistreatment, violence, harm. Who is being harmed when a male wears a female avatar? Now if they get involved in a serious relationship, and they don't tell their partner, then its deceitful and is, therefore, an abuse of the partner's trust.

  9. I don't have the answer for you, but I can suggest one thing that might be a factor. There's a lot of people there. Try going to a fairly empty region adns ee what happens. if it clears up, then it may be due to lag cuasing particles and/orlights to behave like that.

Also, while I do not know SLv2 (tried it, don't like it) there is one thing you might try. See if you can find something called OpenGL Vertex Buffer Objects (VBO). It should be in the viewer's graphics preferences. Disable that.

In the older viewers, it would be Edit>Preferences>Graphics>Hardware Options.

  10. Currency for what country? I'm not up to date, but I think you have to use either US dollars or Euros.

You also need to set up your billing information. PayPal or a major credit card. Many preloaded and reloadable credit cards also work. MasterCards seem to cause the fewest problems. To do all this, you only need to start at the SL site, which you did to be able to post here. On the left hand side of your Dashboard you should see Account with a > next to it. Under that you will find Update  Billing Info.

To get inworld, you need to download and install a viewer. Linden Lab recetnly released their newest viewer, which is a Beta. Many people use Emerald, which you can get at http://modularsystems.sl/downloads.html  I recommend starting with the Beta viewer since it was designed for new people. On teh right hand side of your dashboard you will see two big buttons. The top one being about getting a Linden Home and the one under that is to download Viewer 2.

Hope that helps and welcome to Second Life.

  11. On the top taskbar of your viewer click on view and then enable Property Lines (an X appears at teh left side of it) Keyboard shortcut is Ctrl-Alt-Shit-P. Every parcel will now have a coloured line on its border. Red is owned by someone else. Cyan is your group's land. Green land owned by only you, yellow is For Sale by Resident Owner and purple is For Auction by LL. There is no seperate colour for region boundaries, but your own psoition is shown on the taskbar at the top of your viewer.

  12. As a small clarification, sim is pretty much interchangeable with region, though a person can have a private sim within a region. Also, the co-ordinates go from 0 to 255, but in effect, for building, its a max of 254.9999, at which point, you may end up encraoching on another person's parcel, sim or region. those co-ordinates matter from teh center of a prim. So a 10m prim can sit at 254.9999 and 4.9999 of it will be outside of the parcel.

As an answer to your question, all the prims from all the parcels you own in the same region can be used in one place in the same region.

  13. I don't have sound turned off since I like to hear the various sorts of music people have playing. The sound of heels clicking is distracting and takes away from that enjoyment. It is extremely annoying when its a half a dozen and more, like at some clubs.
