This is why VV came into existence.

I honestly don't know if this is still the case ... or that it offered any actual account protection.

SLU pre-dates the "SL ban for Forum ban" policy. It dates back to 2004 or so and I don't think there's anyone around except Cris who can speak to what motivated its' creation. SLU, of course, became VV1.

Circa 2006 or so there was some drama or another which led to the creation of Second Citizen (which has it's own drama, and has now closed) an SL forum that co-existed with SLU, then later there were others with varying degrees of activity. At one point you probably had 4 or 5 SL-oriented forums coexisting. VV1 comes from that era, and that ecosystem, and is unrelated to what we're talking about -though some people (raises hand) decided to focus their posting efforts to there after the policies became sketchier here.

The fact I'm here (and to date unbanned) is the tasting that is the proof of the pudding.

I find it interesting that some on this forum have no problem belittling people's belief's of a God, higher power or whatever, yet demand acceptance of their sexual orientation, gender identify or LGBTQIA+ status with no questions asked. Just an observation.

That ain't me, I have no problem with anyone's faith. It's actions I have a beef with, such as faith going out and wiping out entire cultures, burning people at the stake for their faith, or any number of other horrors (all of which have been in the mainstream news in recent years).

Also, when it comes to the beliefs that are used to bludgeon LGBTQ+ people for simply existing -as the current dominant religion is so often used to do, then don't be surprised when the people being beaten (often with more than just a bible) by folks who love themselves some Jesus vocalize resentments.

One unofficial forum that was highly recommended to me is "www.virtualverse.one".  It is so popular, that there were many posts on this Forum when that one went down due to the owner being unavailable.  It seems friendly and has less strict moderation.

I am not certain why, but people seem reluctant on this Forum to mention the alternatives.  It could be due to some TOS rule I am unaware of.

In my case, it's a hold-over from days gone by, when there was a threat of losing your account if you were banned from this forum. Honestly, I'm not sure that isn't still the case ...

These are corporate forums for a corporate platform. Marketing is a part of running any business and so much of it is for show — far more hype than substance.

This is always a userful thing to remember when having nostolgia about 'community'. I mean how many times has LL taken a weed-whacker to these forums already? Three or four times that I can think of (twice on the old vbulliten-or-whatever forums, then twice after switching to whatever this is).

This is a community in the sense there are long time members who know and recognize each other; but at the end of the day? It's a corporate platform sponsored for the sake of promotion and marketing.

Forums like this are like a coffeeshop.
Some people are regulars and comment on anything and everything that happens in the coffeeshop, from the customers to the colour of the new chairs. Some people pop by once a month and say: heyyy sup coffee people? Get a little gossip in then wander off somewhere else. Some people just come in for coffee, get what they want and go on their merry way. And, occasionally, some people come in, ask for a coffee, and when there's not enough foam on it they flip over a table and everyone in the shop goes.. bruh.. chill.
And sometimes the cafe owner tells us all to sit down and behave ourselves or they'll close shop early.

now I made myself want coffee.

    Well put, I agree 100%

    Be the change etc?

Today's trivia ... that was a saying by an American educator in 1974. Just pointing out that's not in any of Ghandi's speeches or writings. His general sentiment, granted, but not his actual words.

And obviously, pineapple does not belong on pizza.

1)Regardless of who said it, the advice is sound; you get back what you put out. Yes, different forums have different vibes but if someone consistently gets back negativity they ought to consider that the problem is them.

2)A pizza without pineapple and olives is an abomination

The tone of many of the responses leave little doubt to the degree of "upset" experienced by some, so isn't it gaslighting to also insist that they are not upset?

There's a difference between making an emphatic point and being "upset", and in written communication "tone" can be ambiguous. This is doubly true on a forum such as this where people's behavior is constrained (as opposed to reddit where only the mod's whims rule)

I mean -I'd never dream of stopping you from reading anything into anything you like (such as tone) but I'd just point out it's not necessarily as reliable as you appear to think.

Going to 4Chan and the Simpsons is maybe not the best place to get accurate definitions or their proper intent. It seriously makes one sound like a steamed up PC warrior grasping for something to be offended about. :)

It does look a bit desperate to read implications into words that aren't there just for the sake of kicking up dirt, I agree with you there! 😉

In a more btw context rather than turning it into a personal mission against its use.

It's origins predated 4chan or other online groups as I recall the word being used by people in various recovery groups for years before 4chan was around and used to refer to people who were not saddled with the problems or issues relevant for the group. Being a "normie" wasn't a bad thing as it simply meant you were not an alcoholic or a drug addict or subject to one of the myriad of other issues that some look to recover from. Just because some group or another commandeers a word for negative purposes doesn't mean the whole culture should then give it credibility by subscribing to its new definition.

I grew up in the 70's and 80's with siblings in 12 step programs; this is the first I'm hearing of this usage.

Seriously. This is sounding to me a lot like the steamed hams bit where Skinner's trying to say that's what hamburgers are called in Albany...

If we are "Normies" in SL, I think that makes us automatically non-Normie in the real world. This is one of those threads where a very specific definition has to be given in order to get a good response because everyone is naturally going to define Normie in their own way and then answer according to their own idea.

I'm trans, I live in SL as a woman -that automatically makes me 'not normal'. And yet -I'm a pretty basic *****, all things being equal. I'm a neko but apart from that my musical tastes are classic rockish and my clothing tastes tend to be pretty mainstream.

My point being; a case could be made either way for me. I think that's probably true for a lot of ppl in SL. So I don't really know how to answer the original question apart from:

I don't think it's derogatory.  I think the word "Normie" was probably born out of the phrase from my generation which was "the norm".  In my generation I could say:  "My sister tends to follow the norm.  It's difficult to get her to try new things."  The norm has been used in journalism for decades.

    Here's a def of norm:

    1.

something that is usual, typical, or standard.

Such as, for instance, people are using the word "Normie" on message boards to describe those who do NOT like crypto.  So, in other words, they follow the norm of what has been - fiat, and prefer fiat and want the usual or standard.  And, don't want to diverge out of that norm into another form of "money".  (This is an example.)

For approximately ten years I only saw "normie" thrown about on 4chan and reddit; without exception as a pejorative.

Can I use an Asian skin?  Can Asians use a black skin?  Can whites use an Asian skin?

I love the black/Asian look.  I have no Asian ancestry. Can I use a black skin with an Asian look or vis versa?

Seriously.  Let me know the rules. 🤔🙄

It isn't clear to me what makes people think I know any more than anyone else lol

Speaking strictly for myself and not for anyone else -I tend to err on the side of caution and respect. It's up to everyone else to figure out what that means to them and what they feel comfortable with.
