  1. Trying to do two things at once and keep track of the changes to a working system is next to impossible, but this is par for the course for Linden Labs and Oskar cannot be blamed for this.  The key fact thoush is not just doing two things at once, but the fact that this is a system at work and you can never tell how it will react to even the best tested code, and if the past is a measure LL code is seldom well tested.  My main concern though is introducing new code to the RC servers before we can fully tell the effect of last weeks effort.

Granted last week has let to great improvements in the RC servers, but the memory leaks and the crashes that go with them have not stopped and will not be fully able to be measured til this code is installed on the main servers and we can judge it against the background of the whole system.  Right now it is impossible to tell how much memory is lost in a RC server as opposed to a main server and we badly need a week to judge the impact of last weeks changes on the system as a whole and to see the effect today's server work and the work that will inevitably follow will have on the entire system.

Simply, declaring this fixed and rushing on to another project invites disaster and duplicates the behavior that caused this massive problem in the first place, so for once let's err on the side of caution, take a week to access the results of these changes on the system as a whole, clean up the remaining problems then consider what to do next.  This I realize is not the Linden way but at this point given the mess we are just emerging from maybe it is time to find a new way based on caution, careful consideration and testing rather than a blind rush toward a lemming like disaster.  Again I realize Oskar has little to do with making this decision and am addressing this to his superiors in hopes that they will step back fromt he brink and maybe spare us another disaster that we cannot afford to endure.

  2. Indeed it is true Oskar is one of the few Lindens that will give any productive information and I truly believe he is doing aa good a job as possible with the RC servers, but at this point the issue may be much larger than the RC servers and extend to the core of the database itself, over which he has no control.  I makes no sense that so many key functions that depend on the core server and not the regional servers or viewer should be having trouble at this time unless that trouble is with the core of the database itself.  Moreover, the RC servers are not the only ones being effected by these problems just the ones being hit the worst by it, which makes sense, since they are in effect an lightning rod for the entire system.

If this is so the problem is out of Oskar's hands and all he can do is put bandaids on a gapping wound as he is in fact doing now, and it is up to others in engineering and LL management to make the hard decision to spend the money and time ti will take to restore the core database to something like normality or replace it.  The simple fact is the worst of these troubles begain when LL began to wildly install new elements like Web Profiles, Display Names and Mesh and while some of these problems have been dealt with, display names, I suspect is one of them, others continue to put an horrible strain on the database as a whole, and will continue to do so until the database is either upgraded to meet their demands or they are removed from the system.  Likewise the proliferation of mini games that we have seen over the last month as added to this load and probably needs to be looked at as well.  This, however , is not something Oskar or any member of the RC team has control over and as of now the central leadership of LL which could do something about this apparently has chosen to remain silent and inactive and may be in fact adding new stress to the system daily.

  3. By the way Oskar, my guess is last week's RC code is not directly responsible for this disaster, because things tended to work well till there was some server maintaince done.  Then things fell apart and got worse and worse over the week, so it is my guess that whatever work was done on the hardware triggered something in the RC code and set this cascade of trouble off.  If so this may not be so much a coding problem as a failure in communication and cooperation between two separate projects, and if so the engineers involved need to consider the most recent work done to the code on the server and not assume that what worked on their plans made days before will work now.

  4. Oskar is the Blue Steel servers have been fixed check again, as of a few minutes ago they were all but unusable with the worst lag and unexpected crashes I have seen yet in sl.  Moreover they have been almost this bad for most of the last five weeks with a brief respite two weeks ago when they were apparently fixed, only to be quickly destroyed by more improvements.  The people that are paying tier for land on these servers deserve better at this point, and since both my home and the place where I make my living are on blue steel servers I have had very little income for the last several weeks and spent most of my time elsewhere or recovering from crashs and lag when I am there.  This is hardly the service I and the other paying customers deserve, and if it does not improve I see no reason to continue to pay for otherwise useless land in these area or to pay for services I am not hand have not been getting.  This is a serious problem and, if LL wishes to maintain creditability needs not only to be addressed but fixed and fixed so that it does not happen again.

  5. Could well be, given the recent record of the lindens of saying one thing and doing the opposite then removing evidence of even saying it from grid status, that people have finally lost faith in LL and are not bothering to listen to them, could also be that with the new version of firestorm, which does not include a path to the forums, an omission I assume that comes from viewer 3 that people simply are taking the apparent Linden disinterest in dialogue or communication at face value and ignoring them the same way they have been ignoring the playing population that uses these forums. As for the real reason it is all speculation but I would assume at its heart lies a growing mass of disinterest and distrust.

  6. Still is not a notice in grid status and apparently you have begun.  It is bad enough that you discontinued the restart warnings as a separate notice and offer them only in chat, but to leave us to depend on your advanced schedule of restarts when most of the time you alter it at the last moment is asking a bit much.  LL and the restart team need to be more considerate of the player, for instance a warning in chat is not much good to builders or those in IMs, but they generally will see an official warning, likewise not listing a notice in the grid status is not only confusing but not very likely to win the trust of the players who you catch by surprise in the middle of a project they began because they depended on information you neglected to supply.  It may be LL does not care about any of this and consider the players to be more trouble than they are worth, but let me remind you that without these players SL will be nothing more than a poor copy of facebook and with very little future.

  7. To expect lindens to use common sense or be concerned with customer service is really asking a lot at this point, and we are probably lucky just to get some explanation, vague though it is of what a RC KT server is.  What I can say is whatever you have done has been accompanied by massive lag and crashes in the sims of ours that you have foisted upon us.  It is of course impossible to tell if this is caused by the KT kernel or the OS upgrades or even last weeks restart updates.  Also we have noticed a very large and noticable failure of teleports over the last several weeks accompanied by crashes, so it LL really is serious about doing something besides going through the motions of making like they are trying to fix things they might want to give lag and port failure, and the sudden transformation of avis to clouds, even after they have changed their debug setting to stop this bug.

None of this I fear in in LLs agenda, nor is customer service and instead we will be subjected to another month of continuous restarts without a clue what they are intended to accomplish other than make LL look busy, a further diminished economy, more players leaving sl in frustration, more unexpected and never to be explained bug, followed by more restarts and even less service than we have now, and in the meantime LL will be happily collecting our tier payments for land we may or may not be able to reach and service that we most certainly are not given.  Where this ends is predictable and will the last player to leave sl please turn off the light.  If this seems bitter there is good reason LL has offered increasingly diminished service since the restart program began two years ago, customer service has declined to the point where it is all but non existent and what we are left with is a huge mess that LL seems utterly incapable or uninterested in treating seriously.

  8. Okey now the big question why are we have more restarts tonight after those this morning?  Have you guys made another mess and have to do another rollback, you would think with two weeks time you would have at least gotten this one right, but it does not seem so.  Frankly, if LL cannot improve play and stability with these constant restarts, it may be time to ask what good are they doing as for the last two years things have steadily declined and LL has added more and more material to the already overtaxed servers via the restart process.  With a record as clear as this perhaps it is time someone took a close look at this entire process and asked if it is worth the risks.

  9. Rather than adding a new feature why not do something really radical and needed, curtail adding new material for the rest of this year and actually take the time to fix the problems that have been caused by piling half tested or maybe untested new features onto an already overburdened system.  I realize this is a bit to ask of LL, but we do pay for adequate service and they are giving anything but adequate service at this point and it is high time they fixed this mess before it carshes around them like a house of cards.

  10. This problem of the sim being active and running and appearing down on the map and unavialable for ports has now appeared both at Zerango and Nonhyun.  Sadly, the practical effects of this bug are the same as if the sim were down so we have to hope that LL does not choose to rest on self congratultory false laurels for fixing half the problem, and instead actually fixes the full problem before they make the same mess again tomorrow with the RC restarts.

  11. Well the problem with sims being down after restarts appears to be over, but it has been replaced with another one just as bad.  After the restart the map appears to still show the sim as being down and it is impossible to teleport into it, although you can walk in from an adjacent sim.  Thus, for all effect the appearance that the sim is down is as bad as its being down.

Now we need to see if LL will address this issue or if tomorrow with the RC restarts we have the same problem repeate

  12. This problem does appear to have grown out of some of the server restarts, but the good news is it now appears to be fixed and things are running smoothly again.  For that we owe somebody a huge vote of thanks, and will owe them still more if the trend continues tomorrow and we do not get a repeat of this problem or worse yet a fresh problem to bedevil us. What we need now is stability so things can return to normal and not a headlong rush to more needless and untested additions, but that may be asking a bit much I fear.

  13. You ask a good and important question and the answer may lie in last weeks RC restarts on blue steel server.  After that lag and region crossing were fine for a good while then gradually diminished, but that offers hope that LL is on the right track here and that the storm of restarts we recently endured may actuall bear fruit.  That, however , will not happen if LL remains under the illusion that thing are fine, and will depend on player vocalizing their problems here in the forums and not giving in to the spin masters who insist that sl has no problems and that any problems you are haveing come from your viewer, computer or ISP.

  14. Would it be too much to ask that LL let us know if the seemingly endless string of OS server updates that has made chaos out of the last several weeks of SL are over, or if you intend to come back with another sequence of them?  Also it would really be nice at this point if someone explained to us what if any advantage this venture will offer to game play.  After enduring these things for weeks now it would seem that the very least LL could offer us is notice that they are done and, if done what they may have accomplished.

  15. Funny how you never have problems, but then with 3000 replys on the forum I wonder how much you play sl.  These problems are real and any one in sl encounters them and worse constantly,  One small possiblity that you seem to overlook Peggy is that sl created a huge memory leak in the blue steel RC servers a few weeks ago, advanced it to the main servers then fixed the leak on Blue Steel.  Perhaps this week they will fix it on the main servers as well because this was on LL fix that actually did work as anticipated.  It would be far better if LL just admitted they have problems and were trying to fix them than to let apologist such as you spin and cloud the waters with the same excuses that are the stock and trade of LL.

  16. Credit where credit is due, after tonights server restarts to bluesteel there is a remarkable improvement in performance both in decreased lag and improved rzz and sharper images.  Time will tell if this is a transitory event or not but even sim crossings worked well, so if somethings does not mess things up maybe this OS upgrade will prove the silver bullet we need so badly.  I still wish though that LL would be more forthcoming with information because lack of information is a major factor in player unrest and in them leaving sl.  For not thank you for a job well done and here is hoping the trend can continue beyond the next few days.

  17. It amazes me how as soon as someone criticizes LL or offers proof there is a problem, up jumps an apologist with hundreds of entries on the forum to suggest that this really is the persons computer or ISP.  This kind of misinformation has been typical of LL for far too long and is a major source of the general player mistrust among those who have actually put time in SL that prevades this game.  LLs mantra seems to be if it is not a third party viewer, it is your computer or ISP, and the other day one of the apologists suggested that all would be well if the person complaining had an "adequate" computer with 16meg of memory like they had.  I had to laugh when I checked the recommended standards for running SL and found that LL still considered 1meg of memory optimun.  I realize there is a huge information gap between LL and the playing public but that is a bit beyond even what I would expect, though it may in fact reflect the conditions under which this code is tested and reflect why it fails so frequently under normal gaming conditions.

  18. Your special system must be working overtime because you have sims offline all over sl and port and not working to sims that are up.  Could it be that this series of restarts has caused a bit more than the normal quota of problems?  Serious question, when can we expect the sims to be up again and when will ports and other disrupted services be working again?
