  1. LL should have at least put some measure in where people could not take the names of actual avatars or something. This is just a terrible idea. Actually, Skyler, they did do that! Recognizing the potential for confusion and griefing, they blocked the use of all existing avatar names......when those names end in "Linden".
  2. If it's so harmless and there's no possibility of fraud, griefing, or confusion, why is the use of the name Linden disallowed? It's a simple question that none of you LL Champions™ have yet to answer honestly. Clearly, to the Lindens, it really IS an issue. If the Lindens think it's a big enough issue that they will protect their OWN names, do you not think it should be a big issue for EVERYBODY who wants to protect their name? If not, why not?
  3. Hi, sugarplum. Does everybody here know you just created your account here today, and so far your only posts ever have been ad hominem attacks against me? How stalkerish of you! What the hell is your problem? And you have the gall to whine about MY posts? About MY social ineptness? You're funny, in a sad, pathetic kinda way. Have some coffee. Maybe you'll be more rational. For the record, my problem is not with you, unless you continue to attack me personally.
  4. Nice ad hominem, cupcake! Truly the mark of an educated woman. Keep up the good work, but maybe cut back on the gluten - those "silent messages" sure stink up the joint.
  5. See, Tegg, the thing is this: I don't have to prove anything, the Lindens have done that for me! They invented it, and yet they hide from it. Do the math. If the Lindens felt the need to protect their names, obviously even they understand the likelihood of abuse. I have to wonder why you don't. They just don't give a rat's ass about their customers. Quick show of hands... who is shocked by this revelation?
  6. Nice way to just take it over the top, Tegg. Nobody's talking about banning anything, so no need to be a jerk about it. Tell ya what - you tell me I can set my display name to Jack Linden, and I will have total faith that this is totally harmless. Cause if there's no danger of confusion or abuse, it should be totally find with the Lindens if I call myself Jack Linden, or Torley Linden, or even the revered and venerable Philip Linden. Fair enough?
  7. Pretty snarky, Galea. You must be a Linden programmer whose feelings are hurt by the negative reaction to a poor software release. But hey, snark is a two-way street. Let's play ball!!! I'll see if I can answer your questions in the spirit in which they were asked: "Wow! I thought this discussion was geared towards Display Names?" Here, let me refresh your memory by pasting the TITLE of this page: Viewer 2.3 Beta Available Today With Display Names and More . See that? ...Display Names AND MORE!!! To the discerning reader, that and the body of the post would lead one to believe that this is about display names... dare I say it... AND MORE!!! Steee-rike one. Here comes the pitch: "Why is it that when *anything* is broken, it's always LL's fault? Amazing." Offhand, just a wild left-field guess here, but since this is an Official LL Viewer™, that if it's broken, it is LL's fault. Who would you prefer get the blame? Bush? Obama? Silvio Berlusconi? Elmo? Totally whiffed that one! Steee-rike twooooo!!! Pitcher eyes Yates, winds up for the pitch, and: "Yet another unrelated complaint- case in point." Given that this discussion IS about more than just the lame-assed display name garbage, your final swing... and a miss. Strike three, yer OUT.
  8. Indeed, if everybody was rational and responsible, it would solve the problem. Of course, if everybody WERE rational and responsible, there wouldn't be a problem in the first place
  9. If the name "Linden" is reserved, then that the logical conclusion is that the Lindens fear being impersonated. Therefore they have no business putting other people's names at risk, however small or partly mitigated that risk may be.
  10. 2 things: one has the ability to turn off username. Anybody with that setting would see me only as ColdFrixion Writer. Second thing - still waiting to find out if you can set your display name to Jack Linden.... or ANY linden, for that matter. If so, then I will be satisfied that whatever risk there is, is shared by the Lindens.
  11. I'm not sure how you NOT using a display name would prevent ME from calling myself ColdFrixion Writer. Let me know if you can set your display name to Jack Linden and I'll be satisfied that the Lindens believe that there's no problem with identity theft.
  12. That's what I thought too, except if I picked Joe User as my display name (and it was cleared), and then the next day some noob signed on as Joe User, there would be a conflict. Who gets to use Joe User? A case could be made for either person. I still want to know if you are allowed to create a username of, say, Jack Linden. Anybody know if this is possible?
  13. Regarding v2.3, you say in known issues : "Antialiasing + OS X 10.6 causes Viewer 2.3 to render the screen as a white "glow" - If you're running OSX 10.6, go to Me > Preferences > Graphics > Hardware and set 'Antialiasing' to 'Disabled'. Since antialiasing does not work on OS 10.6, this is a lame direction. It should read thusly: "f you're running OSX 10.6, go to phoenixviewer.com, get the much better Phoenix viewer, and set 'Second Live Viewer 2.anything' to 'Disabled" Regarding display names....Hmm, I wonder if you can set your display name to be a Linden name - if not, that would sure be telling, wouldn't it?!
  14. l will do a more scientific study with an alt, but I know that if somebody who has also friended my alt decides to hide, it doesn't matter which account I look under - that person, when hiding, is simply not on the list. When that person is not hiding they will show up on both lists. It's actually convenient, given SL's poor implementation of hiding.
  15. I've looked at this carefully, with one avatar I know is prone to "hiding" their online status. The Dashboard friends list (left side column), lag issues aside, will tell you if your friend is online, offline, or possibly hiding. If they show as "offline" on your friends list inworld, and "offline" in your web dashboard, then they are simply "offline." However, if they show as "offline" inworld, and do not appear at all in your Dashboard, then they are hiding their status. Personally, I look forward to the day when we can simply appear offline in all lists, groups, "IM for status" attempts, Greenlife, etc. There are times I just do not want to be disturbed, during work, or play, or just because I want a quiet hour or two on the grid. I've actually lost newish friends that way because they thought it was personal. Anyway, that's what's going on. The list is a dead giveaway if somebody is hiding.
