I found that when I tried messaging one friend and they were offline, they didn't receive my messages or friend request. When I was offline I didn't receive their messages or friend request. We tried several times until finally we were able to login on the same day and it finally went through. Another friend I had sent a friend request, they accepted and then a few days later they were off my list. I asked them about it as we've been social media friends for ages and they were just as shocked to hear that we were somehow no longer friends in game. So it could also be some sort of wonky thing going on as well.
