I'm sorry I didn't see this thread before I independently cited "The Hammer and The Dance" in another thread.

It may be that we're past the point where it can work, especially in large US population centers. As is evident in New York City, the virus has silently spread to an astonishing percentage of the population who will be getting sick and dying over the next week or so, and staying at that level of death or worse for the foreseeable future. Never mind the healthcare system, there won't be mortuary facilities to handle the volume of corpses. Given the current approach, the global loss of life will be many times larger than the Second World War.

Western democracies have to decide if we're capable of following instructions and accepting temporary impositions in our "free" lifestyle, or if we opt to cull a large percentage of our senior population.

Either way, the economy is already collapsed; if we take draconian measures now, we may get to gradually restart the economy in a couple months as is already happening in China, Singapore, Taiwan, and South Korea. If on the other hand we don't accept those restrictions (or they don't work here, or it's just too late), it will likely be a year and a half before there's a vaccine and business starts to very slowly revive in most sectors of the economy. Very few businesses will survive that long without revenue. (The stock market collapse reflects the expected loss of revenue; the bond market collapse reflects the expected loss of whole businesses.)

This is not an inconvenience, it is a global catastrophe of proportions as bad or worse than a world war. The next ruling superpower will be the one who comes out ahead from this -- and so far, it's not the west. Not even close.

This. All of it. I know it’s not what anyone wants to hear, but it’s what the experts say. The fact is, sheltering in place WORKS, and it’s all we have that does work, until there is a vaccine or medication. The idea that it is not an option because not everyone can conveniently store weeks of food and toilet paper is just a little myopic when the alternative is millions of deaths.

If one prefers to deal with fantasy, go ahead and fill the churches at Easter like our “president” advises, or if over 60 just follow the advice of his supporters and kill yourself to save the economy.

I'm sorry but I don't care to starve to death before dying from Covid-19.

Not everyone has the room to store a lot of food and supplies, much less have the extra cash to do so. We have to be able to get to the grocery stores if nothing else.

If the US does go into a full lockdown... well... if there is an afterlife, I'll see you all there. I probably should warn you, I'm going to be so angry you'll think the devil has invaded heaven. And I'm going to haunt whoever is left alive forever. 😈

Seriously? You and the ones who liked this post are under the impression that grocery and other essential stores are closed during Shelter in Place orders?  Where did you get the idea that you can’t buy food during lockdown?

Yes, grocery stores (and doctors' offices!) are places where you can pick up the infection.  But there are things you can do to minimize the risk:

    • Wear a bandanna or a scarf and rubber gloves.  No gloves?  borrow a few poop bags from anyone who owns a dog.  Put them over your hands. (Put some on your shopping list too, they are way cheaper than gloves).
    • Do not touch your face until you have returned home and washed your hands
    • Keep at least 6 feet away from other people.
    • If you're really worried, unpack your groceries outside your front door.  Leave the packaging out there. (Go throw it away when you've unpacked of course).
    • When done handling your purchases, remove the gloves.  If they are of a reusable sort, wash them first with soap and hot water...then take them off.
    • Wash hands thoroughly.
    • If you're really worried, or if you have unavoidably been close to someone, change your clothes.  Throw the shopping clothes directly in the washer.  You can take a hot shower with lots of soap too.  (However, most advice I've read says that these measures probably are not necessary.  I include them, in case they'll add to your peace of mind.)
    • Organize a shopping round robin with your neighbors.  Everyone submits a list, and a different person goes out each time to buy stuff for everyone.
    • Another option is online grocery shopping.  Walmart, Target, and Amazon Whole Foods will all deliver (but check to see if they are available in your area; Amazon is not available where I live.)
    • If you are in an "at risk" group (immunocompromised, existing condition like heart disease, diabetes, COPD, or you're over 60) try to have someone else do your shopping for you.

I would add one thing, for those like me who are going to touch their faces no matter what: after you put your gloves on, spray them or apply sanitizer. Because you could be picking up virus on the gloves.

Also, the advice now is to not touch deliveries for 24 hrs, tho for refrigerated things you must just disinfect them. I suppose you could do that with everything. Then trash the packaging.

Today I allowed my diabetic copd husband to go get a Whataburger using the drive through. I grilled him on how he would avoid contamination, and I think he finally gets it: DO NOT TOUCH ANYTHING OR GET NEAR ANYONE. He even put on gloves without a reminder. It was like sending a kindergartner off to the first day of school.

I know.  I know, Madelaine.  It's called false imprisonment.  I don't want to take that on at this time.  That's a pretty big deal.

    So, I'm giving it a little time...but like I said...not a lot of time.  A few days.

Why no tests?  This is really making me upset that there are no tests nor any gloves or masks for shoppers or people going to the doctor.

Seriously? Doctors, nurses, and other medical workers are dying because they don’t have masks and gloves etc. to protect them and you wonder why there are none for shoppers? Do you not follow the news at all?

This was added to our restaurant rules shortly after they were told to stop the dine-in service.  We keep a good enough supply of stuff at home that I don't need to add drinks to my orders though.

The local news has even started keeping a web page listing all of the restaurants, by area, that are doing take-out and/or delivery, but are not on the usual delivery apps like Grubhub and Doordash.

But your gov is actually doing other stuff besides green lighting booze delivery. Texas mayors Of large blue cities have closed things down, tho.

  6. Tonight’s spinach onion Gouda quiche, but I have been making all different kinds of soup.

But I am going to plan on ordering takeout once a week to help out the restaurants. Our Texas governor, always on top of things, early on decreed that they can now include alcoholic drinks with takeout orders. 🤨 That’s about the only sign that he has noticed the virus.

I couldn't believe what went on at work last night..I was and am still furious..

The first thing they did when we went in last night was call a safety meeting and for everyone to meet in the break room..

It didn't dawn on anyone until a few of us started to say, You're not supposed to have more than ten people in a room.. They had everyone in the plant in the break room..

I stood over by the door by myself with it open breathing outside air.. a lot of people acted like there was nothing going on, but you could tell who was worried about it..

it sure wasn't the plant manager and one of the supervisors..

They I see the same thing..people trying to get up close to me and talk..I just held my hand up and said you need to say what you have to say from there..I can hear you..

I've lost all hope of this thing getting handled any time soon..

maybe when they have it or their family members have it,they'll take it serious..

I feel like quitting my damn job right now after seeing such carelessness for the employees..I am so furious right now..

I am furious just hearing about it, Ceka. How callous!

Oh my gaaaaaaaah, I can't hardly believe she lead us to believe it was actual "lock-down" and took it literally.

There is a night guard here who has a key.  I am waiting for them to come on duty soon so I can speak to them.

There are other residents here too who believe we are locked in and cannot go anywhere.

I will let the ones I've talked to already know more of what's going on...such as, we can go out for essentials and she had no right to lock us in.

Evidently none of the residents have televisions or radios or internet.

Nice leap in "logic" there. Variations of my situation are not out of the ordinary. You also seem to be utterly ignoring the financial aspect - must be nice to be able to afford buying more than a week ahead at best and being able to afford to directly buy your medications!

Guess why grocery stores and pharmacies remain open. I’ll wait.

I'm not particularly scared of getting it, because of reasonable precautions. I'm fairly sure I haven't been an contact with anyone who had it, but since there's a really wide range of symptoms, and apparently people can get it and not even know, I can't be certain. I can't be certain I haven't already had it and just not known. I do know I did get enough Clorox wipes to thoroughly sanitize everything I've touched at work (yeah, custodians, this building has the cleanest doorknobs on Earth).

What I'm more scared of is the idea that no one in the media has ever read Aesop's Fables. They just know they have 24 hours of content to shovel out in a day, and at the end of the day they're telling people by the end of the month people will be burning bodies in the streets because the survivors can't dig mass graves fast enough, they've done their job for the day. Then in six months when none of the end of days predictions come to pass and everyone says "hey, there was no wolf", next time no one will listen to them and the wolf will eat everyone.

Dr, Fauci says if extreme measures work as we hope, it retrospect they will seem like overreaction.

    Personally? I'm legally blind.

Between the rest of those I live with? One. And it's irrelevant as having a vehicle does not alleviate the storage situation. And no, renting a storage space somewhere else is not an option. Nor is using said vehicle as storage.

So because you have no room to store food in your apt., millions can die.

    OK

Do you have three to eight weeks of food, medication and other supplies as well as the storage space for it? If you do then whoopdie doo! You're lucky.

Not everyone can do so, be it for financial reasons, logistic reasons or both.

For me? Even pooling together the resources available between myself and the others I live with, we'd be lucky to be able to amass the supplies we'd need - which does include medication. As far as storage goes? We'd have to take up floor space in the apartment itself.

The store room in the basement is prone to flooding when it rains and the 'common area' spaces have been taken up by things belonging to our upstairs neighbors. This includes a good chunk of the garage space.

If anyone is confused: This building is a two story house that was converted into two identical two bedroom apartments. In addition to the entry area (thankfully not cluttered up) the shared spaces include the attached garage (supposed to be split between the apartments) and the main basement area (where there are hookups for a washer and dryer per unit as well as two wash basins and the HVAC units).

Most of that basement space has been taken up by the upstairs neighbors' belongings - no idea what half of it is and I frankly do not care. It is bad enough that even if we had our own washer and dryer (we don't, they do) we'd not be able to use them. As it is, we'd have to move their stuff to install them.

Heaven forbid we try to talk to them ... The last time was a disaster and a half and made it quite clear we were dealing with people who believe they own the bloody building.

TL:DR - The petition can rot.

    I assume you don’t have a vehicle.

*shakes head* regarding Trump's actual statements and the FDA in the above article.

and shrugs I dunno.  I'm just glad there is something working.  People who were positive than tested negative after six days of treatment.  Was that a lie?

It states in the above article, a clinical trial is underway...but it will take a year.  *shakes head again*  A year is a long time.  However, I already knew a clinical trial would be at least a year.

Please don't take hydroxychloroquine (Plaquenil) plus Azithromycin for #COVID19 UNLESS your doctor prescribes it. Both drugs affect the QT interval of your heart and can lead to arrhythmias and sudden death, especially if you are taking other meds or have a heart condition.

    Scared?  No.

I'd bet women are looking over at their boyfriends/husbands wondering if the dude can hunt, make a fire, fight, forage; and second guessing those skinny jeans he has on.

But nothing to be scared of :)

Why would we be wondering if they can do the same things we can do ourselves?

Greater Los Angeles area known as L.A. County.

I hear reports all of California is currently on mandatory lock-down.  For how long, I do not know.

It just occurred to me that perhaps the lock-down is because even if there is/were a medicine, there would not be enough medicine.  The medicine that there is now has been approved to treat those with coronavirus and is showing tremendous results.

The medicines turning positive patients into negative patients are the anti-malaria drug and a specific antibiotic.

The lock-down is then the best option because there isn't enough medicine currently for all of us.  Do you know what I mean?  It would take a while to make more.

Production of the anti-malarial drug has already been stepped up to a greatest priority.

Dealing with claustrophobia is another issue for some of us.   I have claustrophobia and I know now another resident here who does.  He nearly lost it yesterday.  I know the feeling.

But, I'm grateful to hear there is a treatment happening now.

Scylla is right. The “President” lied about medicine, vaccines, hospital ships, Availabilty of tests and masks and ventilators, and pretty much everything else.

Somewhat yes.  I do not want to be kept in a cage for an extended period of time.  Currently the front door to my building is locked.  People cannot go out; people cannot come in except those in masks, gloves and whatever else is considered protective gear.  Food from family can be left outside the front entrance of the building but there is no guarantee we will even get the package from family as there is no security guard there so someone could steal our package from our family.

There is no one with coronavirus in my building nor do I personally know anyone with the virus and yet we are locked in here.

I come from a people where genocide was committed against.  So, scared yes, a little because my Mother had to be locked inside a building and watch her family die.  My Mother and two of her sisters were the only survivors of that particular building.

Schools, clubs, pubs, some shops, all have closed down here, it's up to people to all do their bit, be sensible, to avoid this spreading. Is there enough commonsense though?

Not that I can see. Only mandatory will do. The data is clear.

Wow, another Virgo here.  I'm a perfectionist and so of course I handle every crisis extremely well - and they are all other people's crisis because I don't have crisis.......... at least that is what I tell myself.   B|

Overall, I'm doing okay.  Slept horrid due to a headache, so took a sick day today and vegged on the couch all day.  It felt good being lazy as hell all day.  I didn't even come to the forums until 9:00 pm.

My husband is started to get a little panicky about toilet paper still being unavailable everywhere around here.  I'm not sure why he's concerned right now.  I tend to always keep things very well stocked on a normal basis.  I last bought toilet paper about a week before the world went crazy and yet I still have enough to last us another couple of weeks. By then the stores will have their supply lines pretty much straightened out. That combined with the purchase limiting that is now going on means that there will be toilet paper available when we need it.

We have 15 min status meetings every morning - they are always web meetings as we have people in multiple locations.  My old boss insisted upon video, as all of our laptops have cameras - I actually got in trouble once for turning my video off.  My new boss doesn't care whether or not we use the video for the daily call, so I always keep my camera off -- I have absolutely never been a camera/video/photo type person anyway.  HOWEVER, now that we are all WFH, his boss has suggested that it would be best if all of the meetings that we have, including those daily 15 minute status ones, are done via video "so that we feel more connected" since we won't be having any actual in person meetings with people.

When I work from home, I am usually in my pajamas until around lunch time.  Now, I'll have to go back to popping upstairs before the meeting to toss on a proper top and brush my hair.
    *sigh*
