how does one upgrade the operating system?? buy a new computer?

i dont understand why the new 6.2 viewer wont download to my Mac- it just opens up a error message and the SL viewer never opens up, any assistance would be greatly appreciated- is my MAC TO OLD? im not doing something right? H E L P anyone??
