Switching to a different API like Vulkan is more or less a complete change of rendering architecture

It would be nice to have, but not essential to make multithreaded rendering a reality.  OpenGL supports context sharing, it's possible to fill vertex buffers and such on multiple threads. Draw calls must only be made from one thread at a time, but it's half of the way there.  Not quite as nice as DirectX's deferred contexts, which supports simultaneous draw calls, and definitely not as flexible as vulkan/metal/DX12, but it's something.

But yeah, your point stands still - such changes would be incredibly complex.

the cpu bound parts of graphical rendering and lighting are still single core bound

Hm, I remember Firestorm in 2010 had the menu option Advanced -> Rendering -> Run Multiple Threads

And I remember some chat about deferred rendering at the same time..

    (in before "ok boomer")

Edit: I see now this only referred to background threads. The menu option was a bit misleading i suppose.  But .. yeah, multi-threaded deferred rendering is absolutely possible, maybe one day :)

  3. For what it's worth, Firestorm is currently using 41% of my GPU and 11% of my CPU, at my home region (AMD Ryzen 9 7950X3D /  NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 Ti), getting about 450fps.

Of course, this will tank depending on what region you're on. The main issue with Second Life is it's all custom content. Lots and lots of custom (often very unoptimised) content is really hard to render efficiently.  Games that you play will have huge amounts of precalculated baking, geometry shaders to do the heavily lifting, etc.

However, if you run your viewer at 4k resolution you're certainly going to make more use of your GPU.

  4. CasperHelp Resident is always online (except for brief periods during rolling restarts), it's a support bot - its sole job is to give you a link to file a ticket.

The ticket system is how we manage support requests - I'm afraid that if you don't want to file a ticket, there's not a lot we can do - we need details on the event in order to assist you.

  5. Hi Anna!

For security reasons, the redelivery link which is generated for you will expire after a short while.  Once expired, you'll be asked to sign in - but instead you can just use the redelivery terminal again to get a new link if you wish.

Regarding the "Internal error" - we'd like to look into that! Can you please contact CasperHelp Resident in-world with the details on that (which product did you try to redeliver? Does it happen again when you re-try)?

    Many thanks!

we asked for that recommendation to be changed/removed around the time Casper was acquired by the Lab.

That didn't reach us. I'll change our wiki now to reflect that.

The intention was never for linden homes to be used solely for dropboxes (why wouldn't you just get a regular mainland parcel, in that case?), but for merchants to be able to use the space they already occupy.

Dropboxes only use very minimal region resources, so they certainly don't cause any performance issues. But yeah, I completely get the problem with deserted plots being used for commercial means.

  7. I can totally understand your concern.

At the moment, we're still genuinely operating exactly as we always were. No secret sauce ;)

I expect that in the future, we'll be able to offer enhanced services as a result of tighter integration with Second Life - that makes complete sense, right?  But I wholeheartedly disagree that it precludes resident-led alternatives.

There's nothing stopping anyone from making a 3rd party marketplace - I even ran one for a while. I shut it down due to lack of time to maintain it, not due to any interference from LL, inability to compete or lack of interest.

If we do manage to make a system which is so amazingly perfect for everyone that nobody could possibly need anything else, then surely that's a win for merchants - but I think that a "one solution fits all" scenario is unlikely.  The community is so diverse, and creators are always innovating - that's one of the things I love about Second Life.

There do exist some great alternatives to CasperVend, and I can't imagine why they wouldn't be able to continue. Put it this way - if the tables were turned, I wouldn't be concerned.

(This comes from me, and me alone. I am not speaking for, or on behalf of anyone but myself.)

  8. Hi Coffee!

Well, first of all, I should point out that LL do charge money for some of their services ;) and these additional services still cost money to run. Honestly, I think that CasperVend and CasperLet remain incredibly competitively priced.

It was made pretty clear during the announcement that nothing would change for the foreseeable future. LL have secured CasperTech for Second Life, there's now no risk of us disappearing like other operators have - stability is important for merchants!

The dress did have a HUD and doing some sleuthing I discovered it was calling home.

A HUD calling home can't reveal your IP address. Scripts operate from the region's IP address.

The only way a scripted device can get your IP address is via targeted media, i.e they tell your viewer to access media at a certain personalised URL, which binds your IP address to your avatar key.  This is how RedZone operated before it was yeeted from the grid.

Use the Media Filter built into your viewer. Don't accept media requests that you don't recognise.

  10. Hey, I thought I'd chime in here.

As someone who operates bots which conduct grid surveys to assist with the function of our products and services, my opinion is that - regardless of the LL terms of service - such a system should conduct itself in a respectful manner.

From what I can see, the bots are not collecting any information which is not publicly available, however, I can completely understand that residents may not want their avatar profile information published on the web - which appears to be the only transgression.

In my opinion, publishing avatar profile text and data really isn't necessary for the core functionality of this site, and provides a net reduction in privacy. I think that ideally, this single feature should be removed.

FWIW I can confirm that the L$ values listed under "Marketplace" / "Top Merchants" have no basis in reality ;)

(Opinions expressed in this reply are solely mine and are not endorsed by or related to Linden in any way).

suppose you make a boat and texture it carefully. If a customer chooses to apply different textures to the boat, which might look awful or even include obscene slogans, then other people might assume it was your work, which reflects badly on you.

Creators are, of course, free to set their products to any permissions they wish. However, I find this particular argument a little hard to swallow.

I can buy a pair of designer trainers in real life and deface them in any way I choose - no reasonable person would assume that they came like that, would they?

There are many legitimate reasons to make stuff no-mod, but I think this one is a bit of a reach.

Again, you aren't explaining how, if it were merely in a test edition, it showed up in TPs in stores from merchants who already bought and deployed the system.

I have answered this, and I'll refrain from doing so yet again. If you wish to discuss this or anything else, I am happy to receive you in IM.

The mind boggles at the idea that you could "randomly" pick up my name and from hearsay, decide it is suitable as a "test griefer name to ban". On what basis?

I probably just saw your name pop up in a group chat or something, it wasn't deliberated in any way. I just needed an external avatar name to test the resolver functionality, and I forgot to remove it.

1 hour ago, Prokofy Neva said:

And what you're saying makes no sense. If I encountered this ban repeatedly over time, and even recently, that means that it sold with my name in it, and wasn't just a test.

I think I was quite clear on this: "I neglected to remove it before release". Your (avatar) name was present, accidentally, in one version of the Transporter, and it was removed the instant you told me.

I did explain this to you at the time, seven years ago. We had a conversation about it, I explained why it happened and I apologised, as I have again now. I presume you are only bringing this up again as some kind of leverage?

I'd also like to point out that the transporter makes no use of the term "griefer" - that word came from you - it's just an access control list for access to the teleporter itself.
