  1. I'm an oddball it seems in that I like horror. It can be contemporary horror, historical horror, supernatural urban fantasy horror, but its got to have darkness to it. And I don't mean fluffy romantic vampire twilight-rehash crap. I mean 'decent in to madness' kind of darkness. I'm also not talking about psychotic bloodbath killer types. There needs to be interaction, but I'm talking like Project Zero/Silent Hill/Call of Cthulhu/ kind of creepiness. It doesn't have to be adult, I'm not generally looking to knock pixels, but blood, guts, the supernatural & occult as well as mature themes should be on the table. I'm also a story rper. I play for character and story. I want something to dig my chops into as far as story goes, and there should be something to gleen onto to feel 'in the world'. But it shouldn't be too complicated, or require you to meet a specific person or something to get involved. Once, years ago, my ideal sim did exist. It was called Crimson Falls. It was a cursed modern coastal town with a haunted, hateful ghost filled aslyum (very 'house on haunted hill sort of place') and a town that was subject to all sorts of little maddening plots. There were great players there, a great flexible story, and people who actually wanted to play with new people. The setting was great for a balance of bad guys (the ghosts/town baddies) to the good guys (people trying to save the town/free the ghosts/ etc) The admin staff was very cool, made me feel welcome and the players were smart, friendly, and knew the genre. They kept us updated, generated storylines, got new players involved, and stocked the sim with amazing places to explore that were wholy on genre. Sure, there were always the occasional rabble rousers, but nothing is perfect, and the sim security was pretty good at dealing with them. When we had ideas, it was pretty easy to talk to the admins about them, and if they were good, they listened. Character approval was reasonably quick, and I think towards the end it was meter optional play, previously it was freeform. But as with many RP sims, the finacial drain outweighted the finanacial gain, and some other stuff happened and it never came back. It was sad too because the build was wonderful. It was sad to lose such a great spot and community. I've been searching, for years now, for a place like this. I've visited a lot of RP sims, and most of them seem to share many of the same issues, particularly those that are established for a while. A good build is wonderful. A lot of the sims I visited had nice builds, with all sorts of places I could get lost in (more than often involuntarily), but most seem to serve more to spread people out than bring them together. While its good to have lots of places to go, this can also work against you without a larger player base. I can't tell you how many times I've gone to an RP area only to find four or five people spread out over 1 or more sims, none of which were in remote proximity to each other. And if they were... guess what they were doing. When I did manage to track down someone, I found that they were either afk, lost in PM land, or were 'involved' in a silent scene and kindly asked if I would leave. Which of course I did, but being told to shoo all the time isn't very friendly, but also not being able to listen limits me as a new RPer from getting the 'gist' of expected RP. An ideal community has a build that makes it clear where people should go generally speaking, and while being visually appealing for your genre, also has a community of players that is welcoming and engaging, particularly towards visitors who keep the community growing. My example of this, using my ideal sim, was that Crimson falls had the dock/town square for the living and OOC to gather, and the aslyum for the dead/demons/evil things, although most people hung out in the townsquare for at least a while as it was on the edge of the dock which was an OOC area where people could hang and chat. Coincidently it was also by the teleport point so people who appeared were quickly greeted and welcomed. One thing that annoys me with a lot of the RP sims, particularly the metered ones that do this, is arriving in a box and not being permitted to see the build until I've bought/installed/downloaded some meter, and tried to sus out how the eff to get out of the box to see the build. I want to get a sense of what the place looks like, and what people are like before I commit to getting a meter, picking a race, reading your lore (and sometimes its extensive reading..). Give me a sense of where I'm going, and please don't lock me in a puzzle box where I have to read through a billion things just to see where I might want to play. Obviously aside from the build the community is very important and the players and the culture of an RP. Many RPs i've noticed in SL start as open cultures, welcoming and warm, and as they mature become increasingly cool, distant, and cliquish. My ideal sim has a group of people that are consistantly creative, fun people, who remember that newbies are the lifeblood of a sim and set an example of welcoming and openness, as well as making sure to keep older players engaged with events and storylines they can participate in. They are engaged with their community and help players come together to have a good time. I'd also say when RPing in an area, openly RP as much as possible. Yes, I know there are some things you'd rather not have anyone hear, but RPing is a group game, and there's not much group involved when its only two people RPing 90% of the time. Give others a chance to engage in RP with you, or watch you RP to get an idea of what the game is like and what's expected in terms of posts and tone. I also expect a certain amount of maturity in players. Sadly I'm often disappointed in this. Generally I lean towards freeform/unmetered play. If there is a meter, I prefer it to be optional, and light use. I generally prefer not having a meter though at all, and play through paragraph posts. I don't write novels, but good, tight writing gets me really fired up and excited about the game. I'm not fond of single line posts, I want people to put some thought into it, but at the same time I don't need to wait half an hour for a novella. I'm not fond of purple prose. I've had wonderful play-by-post over messageboards, IM/IRC, email, etc. To me the graphics are really just gravy to the meat that is friendly, creative people, good story, and good RPing skills. If the people are awesome, active, and in character, the graphics aren't a deal breaker. But having a gorgeous build that's empty or full of unfriendly/indifferent/clique-ish people will send me away very quickly. I kinda gave up a while ago trying to find a replacement for my sweet, lost haunted home, and have been attempting to make my own place. Its still in the building process, but maybe, someday I can get together a group of awesome people like there were in Crimson Falls to RP with.

To the OP: Firstly, copyright specifically, as far as art and creative materials only covers the right to reproduce (or copy and distribute publicly) something which has already been set down in a specific form. They KEY here is that you have to have set down in a concrete form. This means it has to be written, drawn/painted/rendered, or recorded. This does not extend to CONCEPTS. So IDEAS don't count. A "shadow demon" is a vague concept. You can't copyright it. From the US copyright office: Copyright does not protect ideas, concepts, systems, or methods of doing something. You may express your ideas in writing or drawings and claim copyright in your description, but be aware that copyright will not protect the idea itself as revealed in your written or artistic work. So the IDEA does not entitle him to any rights. However, on the flipside, Nymph, YOU created an artwork of a skin. That act of setting your idea into a fixed, tangible form, makes YOUR version actually protected by copyright. Unless this guy has artwork that he made that shows a definate match between your skin and his artwork, that could be used to proove that you copied his artwork of a shadowdemon to make your skin, then he's quite honestly got nothing to stand on. You also cannot copyright a name. Another section from the copyright website: Copyright does not protect names, titles, slogans, or short phrases. In some cases, these things may be protected as trademarks. Contact the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office, 800-786-9199, for further information. However, copyright protection may be available for logo artwork that contains sufficient authorship. In some circumstances, an artistic logo may also be protected as a trademark. Honestly, like many people who don't understand copyright and what it protects, he's barking up the wrong tree. You are completely within your rights to stand your ground to this bully. Because honestly, that's all it sounds like he's doing. He cannot own a copyright on the name or concept of shadowdemon. That's it. Period. Because that's not what copyright law covers. I highly suggest you educate yourself more fully on what is and isn't copyrightable and don't let him intimidate yourself or your players with this sort of BS. Check out the US copyright office's FAQ, its pretty comprehensive and covers most of what's considered pretty standard in North America and most of Europe.
  3. Hey Emili, I've got a horror RP you might be interested in, and we're looking for ghostly residents. Its a very strict no sex/no sexual behavior RP so we can accept young avatars. Whats a good horror story without a creepy little girl? We have a site with the backstory and premise here.   4. I know what I look for, but I'm curious to know what other people look for, particularly in SL. Is it an amazing build? particular genre or settings? Is it story/plots? Is it population? Regular events? Are clans and factions important? Is it system, or lack there of? What makes an awesome SL RP to you? What kind of things do you look for in a 'good' sl rp?

  6. Thanks for the reply! Yeah, it took me years to aquire all the peices to put this chunk of land back into one peice. Like everything else on the mainland it had, at one time, been carved up for ad farms and the like, but I slowly got it all back together, and yeah, its not a common configuration, being able to have all the features in one swath of land. I appreciate your advice! I'll have to chew on this a little more it looks like.
  7. So, here's my situation. I've been in SL since 2005, and I've got a pretty big chunk of mainland that I've been stewarding for some time. Over the years, I've managed to carve out a nice rectangular, nearly quarter sim chunk that includes a hill that looks out on the ocean, two protected road sides, a flat area and a lovely ocean side hill down to a protected shoreline out to a Linden ocean sim. It's in an old, but fairly quiet sim all told not far from the Shelter.(although not in that same sim) Its a nice bit of land that I ran my mall on for years as well as my main shop. Sadly, like so many others I'm rapidly careening to the end of my financial rope IRL and I really can't afford to hold onto it much longer. But I don't really want to abandon it, and while I've had chunks of it for sale before, it never sold, and I've been doing a lot of reading. So I see that I have some options. I could 1) Try to sell the whole kaboodle at a stupid low price to a land flipper or bot. 2) Try to rent the land, or parcels at least to recoup tier, 3) Chop the land up and try to sell the parcels I know in the current market, I'll never get what I spent on the land back, but that's not really what I want. I want to lessen my financial tier burden. If I could make regular tier in world, I wouldn't sell, but my sales for my store have been less than stellar and dwindling steadily over the last few years. I'd like to know from people who are more in the know, which of the options is more feasable? Would I be more likely to rent the land out? How would one divvy up such a parcel to make the land more attractive to a buyer? Should I divvy it for renters? What shapes and features should be included? ( I mean, i've got it all, hillside with a view, flat, two roadsides and a waterside...) I'm pretty sure the waterside is the most valuble chunk of land, and I'd much rather sell it to a person actually wanting to live there than a land flipper, but what about the rest of it? Advice? Comments? Offers? XD Thanks in advance to any replies.
  8. I've taught a lot of people RP in various environments, including Tabletop, messageboard, chat, and I'm happy to teach in SL to. I'm a firm believer that everyone has their own style and there's no right or wrong per se, its more what the group or people that you are RPing with standards.I'm fine with you playing a vampire, although I personally would prefer it falls a little more towards the japanese type than the european/holywood type, but I'm more than willing to work with people on their characters. Drop me a notecard in world if you are interested, with when you'll be around and we can connect and chat about your character and what you are looking to learn about in regards to RP.
  9. I think it depends on the style of anime RP you are looking for since anime covers such a broad spectrum of styles, tastes and genre. The RP I'm doing is heavily storybased, there are anime influences ( such as Natsume Yujin-cho, Inu Yasha and other supernatural themed anime) and and its based on a japanese video game (fatal frame/project zero). If you're interested in something anime-esque, but still willing to be original, and you like japanese style horror, this might be something you want to check out. More realistic styled anime-ish avatars are welcome ( like Final Fantasy 7: Advent Children style avies) rather than the hyper stylized/cartoony sort just because for the setting/genre its too silly. The 'demons' are basically Youkai, but if you watch some walk through/play throughs of the various Fatal Frame games, you'll get the gyst of what I'm going for. Although I know horror/supernatural stuff isn't everyone's cup of tea. Just thought I'd give myself a plug, since there is a lot of anime influence in it. However, if you are looking for something more 'you can be anything from anywhere' anime RPs or don't like horror, I haven't really come across any. A few series specific ones, like Naruto based, or Bleach based, but nothing generalized. A few cosplay groups, but its more like RL cosplay. They seem to be smaller these days, and a lot less of them than there used to be.
  10. Hello all, I've been working on this for a while, and I'd like to start gathering up some players for the Horror RP I'm building. The setting has a very heavy Japanese influence, but you don't need to be japanese, or have a japanese character to play. Modern characters are welcome, as are characters from other time periods, particularly humans and ghosts. The setting is heavily influenced by video games such as Fatal Frame (project Zero) and Silent Hill, as well as movies like the Grudge, House on Haunted hill, 13 ghosts, Paranormal Activity, Dark Water, and Ringu, and massive amounts of Japanese folklore & mythology. There are three 'races' avaliable within the setting, Humans, ghosts, and demons.You can read more about the specifics of everything here. I have left some details out deliberatly as not to spoil a lot of the RP stuff that I plan to run. It IS an original setting however, not a copy of any one influence. Although I'd say the Fatal Frame games (all four of them) has probably the heaviest influence on the overall setting. My goal is to build a tight group of core players that I can GM storylines with in this setting, but I know I haven't probably written EVERYTHING people are going to need (players are fun that way) and they never cease to amaze with creativity, so I'd like to find a handful of people who are interested in this sort of a horror setting and interested in participating in regularly scheduled storyline RP to help get me going and test things out. I'm still working on the build in-world, but if people are interested in this RP after reading the material on the website, please send me a notecard in-world with your character idea and some thoughts about what kind of storylines you'd like to get involved in. I'll get back to you and discuss your character concept and answer any questions you might have. I'll be upfront and say this is NOT a sexual RP, but it will probably be extremely violent, with potentially disturbing supernatural themes,, likely bloody and gorey at times as well. Definately an R rated movie, but in no way will it stray into the XXX category. Just so if people are looking for vampire sexings, this is definately not the RP you are looking for.
