  1. Ok, this thread picked my interest as I've also run into some problems in baking normal maps with Blender. I did a search to find more information on the web and happened to find this video tutorial. Can anyone tell me how effective is the technique explained in the video in relation to SL? Is this the proper way to resolve shading issues? Does this technique increases the LI of models?

Please note the tutorial is only 9 min. long despite the 18 min reported. The author complained the length was doubled when the video was uploaded to YouTube.

  2. @LepreKhaun, planar mapping doesn't work with curved faces and when faces are tilted, but in this specific case it's a piece of cake. Faces don't even need to be on the same plan, I often use it to map textures on perpendicular faces, as is often the case with a room. And, as you noted yourself, prims do not need to be linked. As for your suggestion, it's another way to do it but I don't see how your way can be easier/faster than the few clicks required by using planar mapping.

  3. Wow! Thanks a lot for this information. I really was not aware I could bake normal maps from high to low poly models. This adds even more value in my investiment in SD... :)

I know about the new videos, I closely follow SD news and even share them on social networks as part of my "social curator duties" but I have only watched the first video so far. Thanks for the tip. The only gripe I have with SD is that the learning curve is steep and the filters are not adequately documented. In fact, I suggested the folks at Allegorithmic to create a wiki open to the user contribution as we have here for SL. They expressed a mild interest in it so hopefully we''ll see something in the future.

I know what you mean with xNormal. The interface is... erm, weird.

  4. @MistahMoose, can you elaborate on Substance Designer on how it fares with normal maps? I have the program but I am still learning how to use it. As far as I am aware SD doesn't let you bake normal maps from high to low poly meshes.

  5. I dealt with that problem a number of times. What Amethyst said is right, your chance to buy the land is rather small unless you can get in touch with the land owner. One thing I would try is to file a ticket here:

    https://support.secondlife.com/create-case/

The dropdown menu you'll find there lists the type of issues you can file the ticket to, select "land & region".

By filing a ticket LL will check the status of the land owner. There may be a small chance that the account is dead. Usually LL reclaims the land after a number of months. You can give it a try but don't hold your breath.

  6. I haven't had any particular issue with the dashboard but I don't go there too often. I have lots of issues with the profile's social stream at my.secondlife.com: page not loading, very slow posting, etc. I would think that your problems are related and not unusual and that LL's web side performance is really bad.

  8. I suggest not to take that path, Valareos. While placing very high walls will screen off visual clutter you won't contribute much to make your corner of Mainland better for everyone else. What you want to achieve is very much feasible in different ways. You are in a similar situation to what we have in the East River Community. Our community is themed and one of the goals we have in our charter is to improve the visual quality of Mainland. We screen off visual clutter through landscaping, by placing large rocks, plants, etc. We also have some buffer zones which keep some distance from neighbors. Very little clutter is visible within the community, only some peripheral areas are marginally affected.

Admittedly, the landscape and the size of our community (6 sims) helps. And if your land is located in a very cluttered area it may take time (and perhaps money to buy land, though that comes cheap nowadays) to get to a satisfying result. One way to increase size rapidly is to federate your group land with other groups of people who share your idea. This is the model we use for our community and it works pretty well. You may want to take a look at our charter to get an idea.

You can see some pictures of our community here to get an idea of what I am talking about.

  9. Stating that critics on mesh are ganged up and shut up by a pro-mesh mob is a cheap shot, RangiUtu. If you make comments others disagree with and debate then deal with it, don't play the victim. if used well, mesh use far less faces than any prim can ever do.

It's not mesh on the whole that causes lag, it's the way some creators make models. But this is true for anything created in SL. Build something with an excessive number of prims with lots of high resolution textures and you'll have lag. I am pretty sure that the problem reported by Icarus can be tracked down to one or more items made by a specific creator, and replacing those items with better modeled items would solve the problem. What Rahkis suggests is the right way to identity the problem.

  10. Actually, what you say is partly true, Griffin. LL introduced a new feature some months ago to make avatars invisible inside a parcel to anyone not in the parcel. That said, there is no way to have full privacy unless one has a locked-down sim *or* a parcel with ban lines and invisible avis on.

  11. Thank you for raising this matter, Miserlie. And thanks to Ciaran Laval for the lead on this thread. I have been advocating web groups for quite a while, as I did in this post on July 17, 2011.

I'll recap here some of the advantages web groups could offer:

    • A web page as a front-end with some degree of customization for group presentation.
    • A blog for group notices. Social networks should be integrated in it so that all notices can be automatically broadcasted. Of course, all new notices should be automatically delivered to group members as notices do today, but I would consider a subscription system for people who wants to receive automatic updates without being members.
    • A wiki to store information, images, files.
    • A forum with public and private sections. Having sections would be ideal to cover different needs in the same group, such as a private section for group officers. This could also be organized as an information stream the way Facebook or Google Plus work.
    • Group owners should have the ability to make the group visible on the web.

Think of the advantages: revamped groups could be excellent, more effective promotional and social tools, not only inworld but also on the web. There are literally thousands of groups in Second Life covering all kind of topics which could attract new prospective users and better promote the myriads of activities carried on in Second Life. Could there be a better way to show what Second Life is and how people use it than opening this massive amount of information to the web? The wiki and forum (or info stream) could also relieve group chats by part of the load stress they suffer today.

I find it surprising that LL has not considered this opportunity so far.

  12. The fact that the size of your image is not a power of two is a likely reason for the problem you have. Either resize the image to 256 x 256 or 512 x 512.

If you need to check the quality of your image without spending the L$10 fee for the upload, log to the Beta Grid (also called Preview Grid). The purpose of the Beta Grid is to test your work without incurring any upload fee. When you upload any work to the Beta Grid the system will notify that you are charged a fee but this is not actually detracted from your account. You can find more information here: https://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Preview_Grid
