You don't have to pay someone to be out of touch.

It also doesn't matter that you're out of touch if your audience is equally out of touch.

i mean yeah its essentially an article written by someone who has only heard from SL from word-of-mouth and never ever bothered to try it out for real themselves.

  2. If IMVU (and i kinda threw up in my mouth saying their name) managed to get a mostly functional 3D app for their client, i see no reason why SL couldnt manage to

I know, i know, IMVU-s locations are more of a confined places with less sandbox and freedom elements but ffs, we are in 2020, im sure most new-gen phones are more than capable of handling such.

  3. 1. groups that are spamming my notification inbox to high hell. If anything it makes me wanna not bother with most groups, esp the ones related to nightclubs and whatsnot that are especially guilty of spamming left and right

    2. whenever i enter a crowded grid and literally 90 percent of people are just parking/afk-ing. Dont get me wrong, people can do whatever the hell they please, i just find it quite nonsensical to have your avatar idling at one place, not even like dancing or anything all day long but hey, to each their own *shrug*

    3. peeps who go crazy extents to play the apologists for the premium subscription and go butthurt when you arent literally sacrificing your firstborn on the altair of LL

I know I'll get shouted down and/or mocked for this, but I think it's really sad that no one thinks that paying for premium is just a nice way to pay LL for the platform they've provided us. It's all me, me, me.

LL is a business, and it would hurt me, and a lot of other people, greatly if they went out of business. Right now, I'm paying 27 cents a day for my premium account. They could quadruple it and I'd be pretty chill about it. Whatever the super premium costs, I'm already planning on upgrading not matter what the benefits are. That's not what it's about for me. It's about keeping one of my favorite businesses from shutting their doors.

I think of it but i cannot afford it

It's not one command, it's tens of thousands ... They could likely find another way to accomplish the same goal (bowing to massive user pressure) and we're one step back towards LL and FS being adversarial. Which in the grand scheme of things helps no one.

One of the perks of being a TPV is you can hack stuff in without needing to get the server side component in place. I would consider FS's area search and awesome prototype that has shown a solid well demonstrated set of use cases, there now needs to be a FS/LL project to move this from prototype to efficient solution and everybody wins (especially as we know from pathfinding, the code on the server already has the core functionality).

If a viewer's defaults aren't what you like, let them know.

At least for Catznip, we try to ship what we think is a decent out the box setup, use the feedback button in the viewer if you think it's not. Kitty and I have very different individual tastes, so it's not like we're pushing our own on anyone.

    fair point, will do

So far trying to familiarise myself with the basics to begin with before moving to more advanced stuff ^^

still couldnt figure out how to put a collar on my furry avatar so that it doesnt blends in with its fur xD

None of that makes you any less selfish for your "I dont owe LL employees a paycheck last time I checked" attitude. Are you that hoggish in all areas of your life?

Dont worry im not but thank you for your concerns and that you pulled off some ridiculous conclusions out of that one statement of mine.

Anyway im gonna cry myself to sleep because Im so selfish apparently :D  suit yourself, miss Moral Police

And here is the argument I'd make for SL going to a model where everyone is a paid subscriber of one level or another.

i think people at SL are well aware that making the service paywall gated just to use would decrease the population by large amounts and they would shoot themselves in the foot compared to other virtual worlds.

Ever wondered why so many monthly fee mmo-s went f2p? Little hint: its not because the subscription model was so succesful.

Bottomline is: they can do whatever they want, i dont think that my opinion will really have any effect on that, just stating the cold hard facts that in 2019, you are kinda kidding yourself if you think that just because  back in the days, people  happily paid a monthly fee just to enter second life  means that nowadays they could pull off such businesss model change and still be in profits.

And im not talking from the perspective of veteran users/ people who are already invested into their accounts but from the pov of new users/newcomers.

    How extremely selfish of you.

Those lindens you buy are being purchased from other residents, not LL. And when you shop, the merchant gets the vast majority of that purchase. LL gets a cut, but the majority of that cut goes to fees and licenses and permits, etc.

Saying you won't pay to use a service that you, well, use, is like saying you won't pay taxes even though you drive on the roads that those taxes pay for.

I dont owe LL employees a paycheck last time I checked.  They can do whatever they want but that doesnt mean me and many others will stay if they forcefully try and pull the rug out of our feet.

Also last time i checked, SL basic usage is free to play so please excuse me that im not feeling selfish for using the free portion of a service that is offered to me by the company. If people have plenty of money to throw away, good for them, but lets not dvelve into each others wallet.

What makes you say basics don't cover the costs of doing business in SL? Got anything to back that statement up with?

I've owned and operated businesses in RL so I do know what it takes to run one and keep the doors open. I've also had a business in SL before and no one begrudged me being basic. I have to pay the same fees to LL for MP as premiums do, the same fees if I were to cash out, etc. And, unlike others, I do plan to have an inworld store again so I would be paying for the land even if it's indirectly. In the end LL still gets their cuts.

So what it boils down to for you is if someone is of low or fixed income they shouldn't be allowed to have an SL. That may not be what you are thinking but that is the end result. You know what that is called? Discrimination. Which is illegal in the US.

It very much does cover it likely

the keyword for businesses is to make profit, not to basically end up in zero sum.

Well for starters, the amount of offlines would fall, if those accounts are part of x groups, besides relieving said groups from unnecessary lag, as I mentioned before. It may sound like just a drop in the ocean, but we can't determine that if we don't know the volume of actual inactive accounts... it might actually make up for the group allowance being kept at 42, for non-premium users?

I think if Second Life really cared about those, they would have done it by now.

Then again im no business person so hey *knocks on wood*

It wouldn't be the first time LL would have done something not very intelligent.

    And I did say IF.

this would be literally kill a huge party of Second Life and you know this just as well as I do and they probably know it as well.

A monthly fee can work for games like WoW, not so much for a virtual world

You know, it would not surprise me if LL were to do away with basic accounts altogether. If they ever do go that far, they may as well close the doors to Linden Research because there is no way they can stay viable on Sansar income alone. They really are shooting themselves in the foot.

I can almost safely say this wont happen, they would be literally giving more ammo to free services such as IMVU and its ilk
