Has anyone bothered to track down SL's most expensive demo yet?

I once did a search on the MP for Demos, sorted by price highest to lowest, the most expensive item wasn't a demo, and didn't HAVE a demo, it was some "Semi-Exclusive" Template mesh (only x copies ever sold buy now before the last two go!) item from some nameless designer, that retailed for 20,000 L$.

I spent some time wandering down the listings trying to find the most expensive demo, but RL forced me to quit before I found it.

It would be interesting to know just how much some fool thinks their demo is worth...

No, but when I tried to search for just a "dress", the most expensive item is this https://marketplace.secondlife.com/p/The-Pink-Panther-Diamond-Ring-White-Gold-White-Diamond-Donate-in-cancer-research/7877404 for L$2,999,999 which goes to the Cancer Institute Research says the page.

Will totally agree on this i have bought the odd thing over the years where i've seen a print or colour i like and it hasn't been clear it's fat pack available only most recently at a shopping event where the Ad showed an item worn in a plain colour and in the same colour with a print on so i bought it to find the colour and/or print i was interested it wasn't part of the customisation options,

Yeah, I bought a dress one colour because of the picture and the demo had no hud. It had a bow and I thought the hud would let you change the colour of the bow. Most brands usually allow you to change the colour of the bow, belt, frills, etc. In the end, I've never worn the dress because all black didn't look as nice, and never bought from the designer again, though I'm not even sure who it was now.

200 linden for bland, uncommon colors that don't match anything except themselves . "

1500 for a fatpack with 15 bland, uncommon colors that don't match anything except themselves + 5 highly commonly used colors of seksyness."

    Genius.

But yeah, I try to ignore fatpacks too.. They get me sometiems though :'<

I ignore fatpacks too. I've noticed that often the one colour I want is in the fatback, but I just can't justify that amount of money to change a dress colour. Wearing the same dress with 15 different colours doesn't appeal to me, even though I don't change clothes too many times. I'm better buying a different dress in another colour.

You may not care about 1L but for a lot of folks 1L is a lot.
It's not about feeling high and mighty. There is plenty of SL users who slave away in Linden Realms or at fishing spots to get a couple L each day. For those people 1L is a lot if they have very few to spare. 1L demos add up after a while and once they do find something nice they may no longer have enough to even buy the item and need to invest even more time to get a bit more Linden.

Same goes for those with a very limited budget for SL each week/month. Perhaps they can spend only 10 bucks a month on SL, they're exactly the type of in-worlders who will demo the hell out of things to make sure none of those Lindens go to waste, and they'll much prefer free demo's because with each 1L spent their limited budget is going down and down and down.

Granted, I choose to blacklist stores who charge for demo's out of principal, I have plenty of Linden to spare. I just don't appreciate the fact that I am being charged for the opportunity to shop at their store. If a store would charge me in RL to try on a pair of pants I would do the same, I would no longer shop there. Again, it's not about feeling all high and mighty. Just because I am fortunate enough to have a good income within SL doesn't mean I am fortunate in RL. Due to health reasons I'm being more or less forced to live turning over each euro I have to make sure I don't go into the negatives, and I apply that type of thinking to SL, too. Sure sometimes I splurge or indulge for entertainment purposes but that doesn't mean I'll throw my Linden away, those Linden are spent on items I will be enjoying for a long time, not a demo I will trash after one use. I shop a lot, and if I'd start buying 1L demo's it would quickly add up to several hundred Lindens each month, several thousand in a year. Just for demo's. No thank you.

To each their own in this case, it's a matter of perspective, it's not a matter about feeling high and mighty.

Well said. We are not all fortunate to be able to spend money on SL. One person said on Twitter that 1L equals five minutes fishing for her, so she will not buy a demo.

It's not a service. They're trying to convince you to buy the item and you would be a fool to buy it without checking out a demo first. You might as well start paying shops to advertise to you.

People in RL buy clothes all the time with "Adidas" and "Nike" plastered all over them.

In RL, we don't pay to try clothes on in a store, but if ordering online, that' a different story, and brands like Adidas and Nike, yeah, well, that's another story too lol

There are two kinds of stores I don't buy from - stores that offer no demos, and stores that charge for their demos.

Agreed. I went to a store once to find out all the demos were 1L each. Left without looking back.

This is happening at popular fashion events though. I sent an email to the event manager or whoever read the emails on the website, asking for their "thoughts" on this matter lol No one has replied yet.

I'll say again that I'm not a shopper, so I'm not experienced. That said,  I thought that demos came with things like limited time before it poofs, or attached signs, or signs on the item's texture. If a demo is effectively no different to the real thing, then the seller isn't very good at it.

Some of them do but I rarely see them to be honest. Any other demo, have demo written all over them, lack of texture or some big horrible thing hanging over your head or around you. Never seen a demo good enough to wear. And I'm not after freebies. I'm happy to pay but sometimes I need to try before I buy, but I can't see why I should pay for a demo.

On the MP, I prefer $1 demos, it allows me to send them to my Alts without all the rigmarole of relogging into MP as them, then back again.

Yes, I understand that. When it has a purpose, it's fine, but if you're trying to hook me at a fashion event, charging me for a demo is not the way to go in my books. It's a demo.

Well, its that or you can pay the full price of the product which is normally 600L+.

What do you mean? I wanted to try the dress before I buy it since I've never bought from that designer.  I want to understand why some designers are charging to demo their clothes at an event. What's next, we're going to have to pay to look at a piece of furniture before we can buy it?

  10. I've started this discussion on Flickr which might get me banned somewhere for opening my big mouth but I would like for someone to give me a good reason of why I should pay for a demo. And is there anyone that agree or disagree with this? It's not the first I see that at events. I passed on a pair of boots because they were L499 and I had to pay for the demo. I also came across a store once that had all their demos set at L$1.

Why should I pay for a demo?

How they deal with weird customer wishes and negative reviews helps us identify which merchants are worth investing our Lindens in.

I don't feel negative reviews is worth  much on second life at the risk of being banned unless I was a big time blogger such as Strawberrysingh. I'm not even banned on her store, just on the sim where the event happens so not hurting her really, just the other vendors I might have bought from because I'm a spender.  I do say things how I see it on Twitter or blog but I don't use names unless someone really wants to know. I knew she blocked me but I only found out I was banned from the sim because I mentioned in a group I couldn't get in and led me to find out even more shady stuff... And the thing is: I love her stuff, so a bit sad really.

I do try to leave reviews on MP though because I like reading reviews and it sometimes influences me to buy or not, but I've rarely experienced such extreme customer service.

  12. All I want to add to this thread is I don't know much about modding. I mostly resize stuff. I paid a fair bit of money for one object I had not seen which in my opinion was too big and looked unrealistic so it stayed in my inventory. I decided to mention it though in a comment. Being ignorant and did not mean to offend as I have tones of stuff from that store, the creator could have just explained to me why that particular object could not be resized. Instead, I received a nasty message after being blocked on SL and  Flickr and banned from a sim which forbid me access to one event. Now I'm being careful when it says no mod and will easily give it a miss.

I think you should be excited for a new fashion event called "Equal 10"  starting on April 10th because they will have :

    10 Male Clothing Designers

    10 Female Clothing Designers

    5 Female Hair Designers

    5 Male Hair Designers

    1 - 3  Female Skin Designer

    1 - 3 Male Skin Designer

    1 - 3 Make Up Creator

    1 Dance Creator

    1 Pose Designer

     2 Accessoire Designers

    5 Furniture/Decor Designer

That's going to be interesting. Who is the organiser? I'm in the middle of writing a post about the amount of events because Scandalize announced she was starting one. I'd like to see more themed events or events with a purpose (like the one you just mentioned) instead of starting a new event just to start a new event, if you know what I mean...

And can drones be naked like that on a general/moderate sim?

23 hours ago, Coby Foden said:

I remember from the old days when we wore applier clothes on our system bodies.
When there was huge lag in places with lots of people everybody looked like those drones - all just dull grey.
It looked like everybody was naked without clothes and skins. Few days old newbies were wondering "Why are we all naked here?"

So if in the old days such "nudity" was allowed and common thing to happen, I would say that those drones are ok anywhere in SL.
Provided that they don't have the feared female nipples, of course. ¬¬xD

They don't really look naked (from that angle), they look like grey mannequins, so to me it would be okay. It looks more decent than someone "half - if half even," dressed...
