  3. Hi Everyone!
The August Issue of FOCUS Magazine is here and mostly on time! You can read it here https://focusgallerysl.photo.blog/focus-magazine/

Our featured artist for August is Catherine Nikolaidis. She shares her steamy style with us, and discusses her inspiration and her message to her female fans.

Our second feature is another special article by Hermes Kondor. He met with Lord Kaya Angel, Duke of Angel Manor and creator of the infamous Rose Theatre — an architectural work of art.

    Enjoy!

Focus Magazine is the organizing energy behind this group and publishes an in-world magazine.  They can be found on Flickr here.  In-world you can find their offices, gallery, and classrooms in Desert Shores (URL).

Thank you, Nalates! Just wanted to mention that the FOCUS Magazine Community & Art Galleries have moved to the Holly Kai Art Sim

This is a photo by @MrsSeren was her entry into the Focus Magazine photo contest. I've been told that there were over 1000 entries -- Seren's pic made it to the semi-finals in her category (B&W), a pool of just 25 pics. (I think this picture is as good as any I saw there, and much nicer than most.)

Thanks, my friend! What a great photo, right? I remember adding it to the semi-finalists group... We had 20 judges total and 1000 of the most amazing pictures at the Focus/Seabrook 100,000 linden photo contest! We also have a FOCUS Magazine photo contest at the end of every month at the FOCUS Gallery, and every month is excruciating! The submitted photos are always astonishingly creative. But each month they are in the experienced hands of Rachel Magic who rounds up at least 4 judges each month. I'd still love to be able to give a prize to everyone! ♥

I was looking at that earlier, and whilst I quite liked the idea of the theme, it's just .. Not actually a whole lot of usable stuff. The 2D backdrop textures you can make yourself, for free, with a few button clicks. The lights you can make yourself, for free, with a few button clicks. The props .. Well, you can use anything as a photo prop in SL; there are plenty of stores that sell statues and decorative clutter that you can use for photos - lots of stuff in the weekend sales usually that has plenty of potential for cheap, as well as any furniture you buy anyway to put in your homes.

The gadgets are just a bunch of pointless scripts; so long as you don't want your light to do anything peculiar, like blinking, there's no reason whatsoever to script it when you can use the build menu options to a higher degree of precision anyway.

The one thing 'useful' are the poses, but anyone who's interested in doing photography ought to learn to make their own, whether through animation programs, or getting something like Anypose - which direction your head is facing, how broad the shoulders and hips of the model used to make the pose, the arm length, the hand size; buying poses made by someone else will limit what you can do with them, unless you use BDW or a posing HUD to adjust the poses - by which point you might as well have made it yourself anyway.

If I walk into a studio and see a bunch of mesh studio lighting setups, I get the feeling the owner of the place is roleplaying a photographer, which is not the same as doing photography - whilst one doesn't have to exclude the other, it's a bit of a red flag. The exception is photo studio setups made to allow others to use them, which whilst a 'nice thing' to do is also pretty silly - you can achieve better results in a sandbox, some prims, and some locally uploaded textures without spending a dime.

Hi Orwar, Many thanks to you and Natales for your mention of the FOCUS Photography Fair, and I appreciate your opinion. I came up with the idea for the Focus Photography Fair because, as the publisher of FOCUS Magazine, there are many people who have come to me asking *how* they can begin photography and what support tools I can recommend. The FOCUS Photography Fair collects many of these tools into one place - as a sort of trade show - for people to discover tools they may have never seen or even imagined.

I agree it's much more convenient for someone to make their own custom pose, but I think the large number of successful pose creators in SL likely means that either photographers can’t figure it out or don’t want to spend their limited time researching and learning how. Additionally, creating a light projector in SL is fairly easy to do. But how many of us can make a sophisticated lighting system? For many, it’s more valuable to focus on the subject of the photo, rather than figuring out how to re-create a product. Again, I really think it just comes down to the finite amount of time people have and how they want to spend it.

And right now with enhanced environments, many people are confused and feeling like their artistic and creative outlet has been taken away. In response, we have vendors like Polyhistor with her (in my opinion) excellent windlights for just 100L. Our hope is that people can experiment without making a large investment and find that EEP is not a reason to leave SL and their art behind.

The ultimate purpose of the fair isn't to assist advanced photographers get better, but it's also not especially for the novice photographer either. The purpose is to gather information that may be useful for *all* photographers, to give lesser known gadget creators a chance to reach photographers, and -- possibly most of all -- to increase awareness of SL's incredible (though slightly disjointed) art community.

We are only in our 2nd year of the Focus Photography Fair, and I definitely look forward to learning more about what people would like to see there. I’d also like to mention that we don't profit from the Focus Photography Fair. Our goal is genuinely to serve the community. Our reasonable vendor booth fees are used to pay to the winners of our 5 photo contests, advertising and other expenses. In addition, Cesar Lighthouse continues to do a simply incredible service for the art of music in SL. We have live singers and DJ’s daily throughout the fair. The entire fair has been a truly encouraging experience in support of the arts.

The Focus Photography Fair will be going strong until May 14th. I would love to invite you back to take a look again. Perhaps watch the community gather in positivity at the events, maybe chat with some visitors, attend a workshop and speak to some of our seasoned and astonishingly creative photographers who credit many of these gadgets for their artistic success. And while you’re there, pick-up a copy of FOCUS Magazine! Best regards 😊Angela Thespian

As in real life, starting a gallery is difficult. So most artists work with existing galleries. The gallery usually has a clientele and the owners have a reasonable idea of what their clients like. They will tell you if your art is going to work for them. Or if they like it or want to push their envelope they may do a show of your art to introduce you to their clients.

In SL there are art magazines. Check out FOCUS Magazine (Too Sexy for this Group) There are several more. This is  just one I like.

Magazines will get you noticed and often they do in-world shows or they have a gallery where you can display more of your art than what appears in the magazine.

You'll see Tali and Bagnu around the forum. They have opened galleries. You can talk to them about how that is going and what they are doing to get there art out there.

    Good luck.

Thank you for the mention, Nalates!

  8. Thank you everyone! I will need to read this thread a few more times to understand everyone better, but I think the takeaway on NFT's is that: #1 No, NFT's are not entirely legal, or logical and will likely just cause issues and cost money. #2 For those who want to sell their creative photos in the real world (as opposed to the virtual one), it *IS* legal for someone to sell photos of Second Life that may include avatars, goods and sims made by others - even if the maker explicitly says not to - because legally, photos are an artistically modified version of the item, not a resale of the exact item. So for all of those Flickr photos of SL that we see, those photographers who created them can go to a gallery in New York and try to peddle them there. Yes? So, they may be copyrighted as original works but they cannot be non-fungible according to LL's TOS. Can I get an Amen? Or at least a "that is how I understand TOS too?" I have asked Linden Labs, and I was referred to the TOS. I almost wonder if anyone clearly knows, and if special little leprechaun lawyers wrote the TOS just to confuse everyone. Thanks again to everyone.

  9. Hi Everyone,

I would guess I'm not the first person to ask this question, but I can't find any threads or other info about this: Is it possible for an SL photographer to sell their digital photos as NFTs? Lately, selling NFTs is a hot topic. We see digital art selling at marketplaces like Nifty Gateway for obscene amounts. Obviously, that's rare. Still a number of photographers have come to me lately asking if photos taken in Second Life are saleable as an NFT for a profit -- even a small profit -- on marketplaces like Nifty Gateway or Rarible. The TOS is so confusing.

I've read bunches of opinions on the TOS and ethics etc., but does anyone have a concrete verifiable answer? Thanks!

  10. HI! We are FOCUS Magazine & Gallery, The Exploratorium Photo Gallery, and FAIR Photo Gallery, and we are looking for a few people who are interested in being a part of our team. The magazine, the galleries, the events, the photo contests, the fundraisers – all have a spirit of community and collaboration. That is our fundamental goal: to bring people together in a fun and positive way, creating happiness, and appreciating each individual. We  all have RL’s, and we all want to have fun in SL. A large time commitment is unnecessary. But if you have a positive outlook, some patience with scattered brains, think “grassroots” entrepreneurial endeavors are FUN, a team spirit and a few hours a month to contribute and share with our fun group, please join us! All ideas welcome. We are a moderate group.
