"I genuinely love my Linden home and I'm so incredibly thankful that LL decided to launch these. I do wish they'd add more though so everyone could join in on the fun of choosing and decorating one. I've actually chosen to go nuts decorating mine for Halloween. If you want to explore it, I'm on the Washburn SIM! I'd love to have you over for some candy and maybe a tarot reading!"

‘Catfish’ UK Now Seeking Second Life Stories
Regular readers of this blog may recall that some months ago, MTV’s Catfish: The TV Show was seeking stories from Second Life (read our blog post here).
Now, the UK edition of the show is also eager to hear from Second Life users involved in serious online relationships with people they’ve not yet met offline.
If you’re interested in participating, check out their casting call below:

    Heya! April Linden here.
Yesterday afternoon (San Francisco time) all of the Place Pages got reset back to their default state. All customizations have been lost. We know this is really frustrating, and I want to explain what happened.
A script that our developers use to reset their development databases back to a clean state was accidently run against the production database. It was completely human error. Worse, none of the backups we had of the database actually worked, leaving us unable to restore it. After a few frantic hours yesterday trying to figure out if we had any way to get the data back, we decided the best thing to do was just to leave it alone, but in a totally clean state.
An unfortunate side effect of this accident is that all of the web addresses to existing Place Pages will change. There is a unique identifier in the address that points to the parcel that the Place Page is for, and without the database, we’re unable to link the address to the parcel. (A new one will automatically be generated the first time a Place Page is visited.) If you have bookmarks to any Place Pages in your browser, or on social media sites, they'll have to be updated.
Because of this accident, we’re taking a look at the procedures we already have to make sure this sort of mistake doesn’t happen again. We’re also doing an audit of all of our database backups to make sure they’re working like we expect them to.
I’d like to stress that we’re really sorry this accident occurred. I personally had a bunch of Place Pages I’d created, so I’m right in there with everyone else in being sad. (But I’m determined to rebuild them!)
Since we’re on the topic of human error, I’d like to share with you a neat piece of the culture we have here at the Lab.
We encourage people to take risks and push the limits of what we think is possible with technology and virtual worlds. It helps keep us flexible and innovative. However… sometimes things don’t work out the way they were planned, and things break. What we do for penance is what makes us unique.
Around the offices (and inworld!) we have sets of overly sized green ears. If a Linden breaks the grid, they may optionally, if they choose to, wear the Shrek Ears as a way of owning their mistake.
If we see a fellow Linden wearing the Shrek Ears, we all know they’ve fessed up, and they’re owning their mistake. Rather than tease them, we try to be supportive. They’re having a bad day as it is, and it’s a sign that someone could use a little bit of niceness in their life.
At the end of the day, the Linden takes off the Shrek Ears, and we move on. It’s now in the past, and it’s time to learn from our mistakes and focus on the future.
There are people wearing Shrek Ears around the office and inworld today. If you see a Linden wearing them, please know that’s their way of saying sorry, and they’re really having a bad day.

"I’ve blinded my eyes with ornament. Replaced my limbs with ornament. Cut out my organs for ornament. Am I beautiful yet? I can dance for you. Watch me. I will never stop dancing. Never stop watching. Never. Stop. Or else."

“Eye of newt, and toe of frog,
Wool of bat, and tongue of dog,
    Adder’s fork, and blind-worm’s sting,
    Lizard’s leg, and owlet’s wing,—
For a charm of powerful trouble,
Like a hell-broth boil and bubble.
    Double, double toil and trouble;
    Fire burn, and caldron bubble.”

Earlier this year, we blogged about a British documentary company that was seeking stories from couples who had met in online communities, for a series to be called “Happily Ever Avatar.”
The production team has since filmed five couples who first met in Second Life and found happiness together other offline as well. The team notes that “this is a positive look at virtual relationships. We are determined to open people’s minds to the possibilities that virtual worlds offer.”
One story they have yet to capture is a couple that is just about to meet offline for the first time, and so they’re currently seeking a Second Life couple open to having their first offline meeting filmed for the series. Ideally, at least one person involved would be in the UK. The deadline for filming is October, so they’re hoping to find a couple planning to meet in August of September.

As you may have seen in the news, email/password combinations for user accounts on other platforms--including Sony’s PlayStation Network--have recently been released following ongoing attacks.

To be clear, Second Life has not been targeted in attacks of this kind and your personal information remains secure with us.

However, if you access Second Life using the same password from a platform that has been attacked, then your email address could be all that’s needed to take control of your Second Life account. Recently, we have seen people attempt to acquire Second Life users email addresses by posing as a Support agent, a Linden, a trusted member of a group, or someone that you know. We want to do everything possible to help you protect yourself from these attacks.

Here are a few things that you should do right now to ensure that your personal information and your Second Life account remains safe and secure.

Do Not Reuse Your Second Life Password on Other Platforms
Using your Second Life password on other platforms, such as forums, bank accounts, or email services, may put your account at risk if these other platforms are compromised. Change your Second Life password, as soon as possible, if this situation applies to you.

    Always Practice Good Password Hygiene
Here are some good rules of thumb to create a secure password.
        •    Never use a simple word
        •    Make it at least 8 characters in length
        •    Include two numbers
        •    Include two shift-key characters (i.e. %, *, #, +)

Be Cautious When Sharing Personal Information Inworld
No Linden or Support agent will ever make an unsolicited request for your personal information or password. Do not comply with any such requests, even if they are from an inworld friend or group member, and file an Abuse Report immediately.

Finally, if you think that your account has been compromised, then please contact Support and we will help you to resolve the situation.
