  1. Tateru Nino got some answers from Linden Lab about this policy change:

    http://dwellonit.taterunino.net/2012/02/28/linden-lab-answers-questions-about-the-third-party-viewer-policy-changes/

I'm amazed and glad that she was able to ask them and get answers, but honestly I don't think the answers add much to our understanding, except on two points.

One is why they announced it the way they did: they don't think that it affects users; only developers. Which is wrong, but that's their view.

The other is that they're committed to the vagueness of 2.k: they don't want to make a list of allowed features. If you want to know about one feature in particular, you're supposed to ask Oz whether it's allowed.

Tateru makes an outstanding point when she asks, "Doesn’t the text of the policy automatically take precedence over any representations about the policy?" Meaning that assurances that this or that feature isn't forbidden by the wording of the policy. Apparently, LL wants it to be vague; wants the list of allowed features to be sort of known but not written down.

Anyway, that's my take on it.

"They don't want TPVs to introduce new in-world content and effects that the rest of the grid can't see. Weird custom attachment points, different region behavior, custom object types.

"They don't care about UI, building tools, RLV, etc. etc."

If that's what they meant to say in the new policy, that's what the policy should have said.

It would be difficult for the policy to be more vague, and that is a problem.

  3. Clearly Linden Lab is tired of running behind the TPVs, of having less interesting features, and above all, of having fewer users.

The viewer tags are quite useful when helping other users... but fine, we can live without them.

However, the INCREDIBLY vague 2.k can only be intended to discourage and confuse TPV developers. Since it is so utterly unspecific, any judgments based on it will necessarily be arbitrary.

This announcement is a misguided move against TPVs.

  4. I know that everyone hates facelights, but I've started using them lately for taking pictures. I have dark skin, and sometimes my face ends up being so dark that it ruins the picture.

Now, suddenly none of my lights work. I have some that are soft and others that are brilliant, but none of them light up at all now.

The problem began when I went to a sim and agreed to let my windlight settings change. I'd never accepted windlight settings before, and I found the change puzzling but oh well.

Since then, after leaving the sim and trying on several others, I can't get my facelights to work at all. I can see them attach, but then they just disappear. No light at all. And yes, they are still attached.

I've been looking around for a way to shut windlight off, but can't find it.

I realize that I'm supposed to love windlight madly, but right now I don't feel that I have the time to learn something new, and am honestly not interested. I just want to shut it off, if that's what making the lights not work, and if it's not windlight, I apologize, but in either case, I'm frustrated.

I have heard that the new names are going to be mesh-based, so that you can create them in external 3D modeling programs and import them into SL.

You will need a special viewer to see them, and if you don't the names will just look like random dots or nothing at all.

will there be an upload fee?

Yes, and it depends on the complexity of the name.  They are still working out the details of how to determine "complexity".

Charlotte, could you please list a few top-quality stores for mesh clothing? I'm willing to try some mesh clothes (I hate sculpty clothes).

Yes, I'd like to second that request. I'd also like to know about good mesh hair designers.

If it's really as good as you say, I'd rather be wearing it. Yours is the first enthusiastically positive comment I've heard.

  7. I'm neutral about mesh.

Pretty much the only things I buy or get in SL are clothes, hair, and shoes -- and I don't think the new mesh has had much of an impact there.

I have seen a few mesh items featured in fashion blogs, but none of them appealed to me enough that I went to try or buy them.

I don't actively seek out mesh items because -- as I understand it -- the items will either fit me or change me. So it's a gamble. I have some complicated prim clothes that don't fit right, but at least there I have the possibility of making them work.

I have seen a handful of people wear mesh clothes, but to me they appeared to have portions of their body invisible. It's probably a rezzing problem, because I've been using a mesh-capable viewer for a long time.

I'm sure the kinks will eventually work out, that sizing will someday be available, and probably something will be beautiful enough to compel me to want it. But that hasn't happened yet.

Does your partner have something to hide then?

We all have something to hide. If you don't think so, why don't you post your credit card information? Your phone number?

And if you have nothing to hide, does that mean you have no curtains or shades on the windows of your home? Do you close the door of the bathroom when you're relieving yourself? Are you naked everywhere you go? Do you always and everywhere have your name, address, and other info clearly visible, so that anyone and everyone can see who you are and where you live?

If you're leaving your home and a stranger asks where you're going and how long you'll be away, do you respond truthfully in a clear loud voice?

If you don't do all that, then you have something to hide -- which is good, normal, and civilized.

  9. I haven't had a problem helping newbies, no matter which viewer they're using. Generally newbies are using the official viewer, anyway.

I've been using Phoenix and now Firestorm ever since V2 came out. But the things that new users usually need or have problems with are pretty much in the same place, no matter what the viewer.

One advantage of Phoenix/Firestorm is that you can see which viewer a person is using, which makes it easier to help.

  10. What I've done (and others have done for me) is to bring the person to the shop in front of the item and give them the money to buy it.

It's not as tawdry as it might sound, since the money is intangible. It's not like in RL, where you'd remember someone putting cash in your hand, or standing by the cash register while they pay.

It's actually pretty nice, because what you remember is the person bringing you somewhere, saying "I want to give you that", and poof! it's yours

  11. I'm not an industry or a media, so I don't have a sense that SL failed.

What happened is that SL put the means of production in the hands of anyone who wanted it. This effectively put individuals on the same footing as the corporations as far as making things to sell or look at.

The only advantage a company has over an individual is money, if it cares to spend it, but even that can be overcome by individual's putting in time.

  12. No, I'm not interested, but then again, I'm not a builder or designer. So I don't think my lack of interest means much.

I'm in SL to socialize, and I don't see the new mesh changing anything about that.
(Probably the only change that would affect that would be more people online at the same time I am.)

If the new mesh clothes are good, then I will be buying them.

However, every time I read about the new mesh, I get very uncomfortable. It seems to be very complicated
and in some ways more restrictive than the clothes we have now.

Maybe the problem is that the people who understand it and are excited about it are not very good
at describing what excites them. I mean, they talk about "bones" and about how you can modify
clothes outside of SL (why?) and how the new mesh clothes will only fit specific avatar shapes.

All of that does not seem very exciting or interesting to me.  But then again, I probably misunderstand, so...

I was thinking today that maybe I ought to just avoid anything I see written about mesh, and just
wait for it to appear so I can see it.

Things are much more clear if you're a paid info member! After all LL have your real personal info and is much easier for you to prove who you are.

LL has always known who I am.  They have my payment information, which is all that they would

    have if I were premium.

In addition, I've provided copies of legal identification to them, and demonstrated that the compromised account is mine.

My question is whether they would work on the issue more quickly if I became a premium member now.

  14. I have a similar issue, and I've made several phone calls to LL. Even though the people I spoke with were professional
and sympathetic, they couldn't do anything about the problem, because it has to be investigated.

So you have to open an issue, and you have to prove that the account in question really belongs to you.

Unfortunately, after you've done that, all you can do is wait.  In your case, if no money is involved, it might be
    resolved quickly.

I opened my issue about three weeks ago. Someone began looking into it ten business days later,
and I'm waiting to hear the outcome.  Of course, not knowing how long it ought to take makes for
    a lot of suspense.

I have been wondering if I went premium, whether it would speed things up...

  15. There is only one thing that makes a shape good or bad, and that is the face.

It is the hardest thing to get right. There are more sliders for the face and head than the whole rest of the body.

You can judge the rest of the body in a glance, but the only part you should REALLY take your time on is the face.

  16. How much others know about my real life depends entirely on who they are to me, not on my approach to SL.

There are a couple of people who know who I am, where I live, etc.

Most of my friends and acquaintances know something about my RL, but nothing terribly specific.

Everyone else only knows Ossian. I will answer the age/sex/location questions truthfully,
but I do judge people on how quick they are to ask those questions.

If it's obvious that it's the main thing they want to know, I put them in the "bumpkin" category.

If they're only asking to make conversation, I'm more lenient.
