Well said Daniel and Myst. In fact everyone I have spoken too in world had no idea about this so far and it is already in place in the main grid. That is what is scary. Not all keep up with blogs and are techies and the average user I feel will not even realize people can do this yet. In addition, it is easy to say something like "well just roll over them and see" but when you run many sims with heavy traffic and have griefers to deal with, it is not always that easy. This just creates more risk and a huge amount of additional work for busy sim owners.

That is not true Ajax. You have to have it clicked on to see the real avatar name without looking at their profile. If people do not have that clicked on they only see the display name not the real avatar name.

I agree 100% with Jean and will do the same on my sims. Display names are like using a fake ID which is illegal in RL and yet in SL is being not only allowed but encouraged it seems. I also will keep my real name and others visiting will have to do display the same.

Obviously Ajax must not have anything invested here in Regions or a business or he would see the issue with someone taking your name. It is absoultely absurd that someone can IM others with my name. I cannot see the logic of anyone supporting this blatant stealing of people's identities in SL.

So they are protecting their name but don't care about their customers names that have spent a fortune in time and money building their reputation. I guess I understand the idea of changing display names changing, but I just think that the way it is being done was not thought through at all. There are no measures in place to protect avatars names from possible AR's etc that they didn't even have anything to do with. The griefers must be celebrating right now.

I totally agree with Neo and all the others that are saying this is a BAD feature that was not thought out at all. It is so easy for a griefer to impersonate an avatar that someone spend tons of money and time building and can all be destroyed in seconds. Some people will not take the time to see who the av actually is and the damage will be done. LL should have at least put some measure in where people could not take the names of actual avatars or something. This is just a terrible idea.

This display name change is the craziest thing I have ever heard. So basically if I have this right, someone can change their name to my avatar name, go cause trouble in chat or elsewhere, then my avatar name which I worked so hard to create a good image for will show in that chat as me saying it? Is this correct? When people AR someone or ban then from sims sometimes, they go by what they see on the display name. Also, if someone does have a ligitimate complaint on someone and uses the chat log as proof of what someone said, there is no way to really prove that was them anymore. I have 3 sims I have invested tons of money and time into and can all be ruined by someone impersonating me. It isn't even worth the investment or risk anymore.
