Second Life won't start.  I've tried various viewers including the latest from this website.  I've done clean installs, deleted the files as recommended each time.  I'm using an Asus laptop with ATI HD5870 mobility gfx.  It runs most 3D games at good-high 3D settings, and the drivers are as uptodate as they can be. I'm using Windows 7 64-bit with an i7 processor and 6GB RAM.

Every time I try to load it crashes right after detecting hardware, I reckon it's a gfx issue.

Not sure this will help but you can try to start the viewer without hardware detect.  Add  --noprobe to your startup string in the viewer shortcut.  See the article below for more details.  Perhaps by skipping the hardware detect you will get lucky.
