I got tired of always refering back to the vertex group/avatar bone list, so something that should have been very obvious to me just kicked in.

I keep the avatar file as my default start up, but this will work if you keep it as a separate blend file also.

Make a new window and bring up the text window (a great feature I forget to use).  Add the list of bones (and you can include any reminders to yourself as a check list, such as: don't forget to check "make real" on the modifier, check that all verts are in a vert group, etc.  Save the file or CTL U if you want this to be the start up file.

You can get rid of the window and recreate it as needed, or just slide it closed and keep the header visible.

Now if you are making your own bone set up you can just go to the text window and ctl c copy and clt v paste the name of each bone or vert group exactly as it should be without risking a typo.  You can also open the window to see your notes and check list.
