Check your firewall to see if the SL application or related processes have been blocked. (I'm not sure how to do this myself, but it is a possible cause). Also, make sure your internet connection is up to the task keeping in mind that SL is very demanding on both speed and quality for the connection. Check your speed and quality by running the tests at http://www.speedtest.net/ and http://www.pingtest.net. If you are on a wireless network, try connection using a cable.
