i am sorry to hear about the negative experiences.

in addition to cinnamon's answer re reporting abuse; yes, unfortunately public sandboxes are often completely useless due to griefing.

try look for a sandbox that requires you be in a closed enrollment group to access and/or rez. this may and should prevent the **bleep**hats (i bleeped myself there) and you and your friends can open boxes in peace. it may seem like hassle to find such a place, but it could be worth it in the long run if you don't have own land.
