changing avi size

is there a way to edit the size of an avi by the same method used to edit an object? -For example, if I click on an object and choose edit I can then grab a corner with my mouse and just drag it larger or smaller, and everything within the object will be proportioned to the new size.

Unfortunately not. With the exception of a few avatars made of regular prims or sculpts, you can't resize an avatar this way. The only way to resize the default avatar is via the shape editor, and there's no simple way to scale up or down while preserving proportions.
