Why can't I go into edit on objects?

I am unable to go into edit on objects that do not belong to me. When I try to go into edit nothing happens. It won't even show me the object info. I'm helping rearrange some things for a friend and I have their editing/modifying rights but SL is giving me issues. I am able to edit my own objects fine. Anyone have any suggestions on how I can solve this issue?

Check under Build - Options and see if Select Only My Objects is enable.  If it is disable it and see if that helps.
