I was trying to help someone, a mesh builder, get started on the Beta Grid today, and didn't see a recent forum thread with instructions. Everything you need to know is here, or so I think: http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Aditi

The reason to use the Beta Grid for mesh drafts is to save a lot of L$ on drafts (e.g., previews, trials, etc.) of your builds. Once your build is final, then pay once to upload on the main grid.
