Linking Objects And Physics Shapes

I uploaded a Mesh object and then linked it to a normal prim to act as a floor. At this point I could now walk through my walls, although when I placed a prim against the walls, it went pretty much where I expected.

When I looked at the metadata, the physics shape for my mesh object had vanished.

So I did a few experiments, linking it in different ways, so for example reversing the order in which I linked the objects, not setting the mesh object to convex hull, getting myself confused.

Now I can get the physics shape to disappear, but still work, as in I can't walk through walls, but when I go to render metadata physics shapes, there's no physics shape showing, but the physics shape seems to be working.

Is this expected behaviour?
