How do I get my inventory to show me the number of items therein?

My inventory shows the total number of items contained in it when it's in 'fetching' mode. Once it has found all the items, it no longer displays the number. I'm trying to reduce my inventory by a certain amount and want to be able to keep track of my progress. Is there a way to force it to show mw the total number?

I thought the recent tab always shows the total number of inventory items.

Try typing something...anything...in the inventory search entry box.
